so the newspapers say people are buying 'posh lidl/aldi food' and one of the things they said was that people are buying premium 'cut meats' because they're cheaper... but when i went in there it was all reconsitiuted-pressed-reformed-ham-extract-with water and glucose..???

right?

or do some of these places actually have actual ham from actual pigs at a decent price?

You have to ask for the 'special stuff' at the meat counter. If you are smartly dressed they will offer you the good stuff.

As opposed to the premium 'Bernard Matthews' brand you are used to? Or the old stuff off the deli counter they wrap in clingfilm when its getting a bit crusty on the bottom. wink

I find Aldi quite good for obscure Eastern European food. Lidl is excellent on the continent, but rubbish in the UK.

Lidl was ok for cheap lager and Aldi was ok for veggies but I'd consider neither to be posh wink

Aldi own brand stuff is very often the same as M&S own brand stuff.

Careful shopping in both Lidl and Aldi will turn up some top grub.

In Lidl, avoid anything made in the UK or Ireland. Look for food sourced from anywhere in mainland Europe. Great offers on fresh fruit and veg.

In Aldi, they have a 'quality' range with packaging similar in look to Tesco's 'Finest'. (Can't remember what it's called. Hmmn.) M&S could learn a few lessons from some of the food in that range. Great range and price on fruit and veg again. Again, avoid UK and Ireland sourced packaged food. Some great imported frozen food.

The car park of the Aldi i normally frequent is almost always full. Compered to a year ago when there were plenty of spaces. The store is also being expanded. So the single brand no nonsense approach is definitely becoming more popular with the public at large.

I am not knocking these shops..anything is better than asda.. it's just that this headline jumped out at me as I had recently tried to find the one thing they highlighted... maybe lidl is better.

_______

finally, i reckon there must be a very fine line between some of the savings you can make and the amount of fuel you have to use to get there (unless on your doorstep or way home from work or whatever).

If you aren't clever enough to read the foreign writing, you shouldn't be in there. Asda is this way =>

We normally get our shopping from Ocado. My wife started to get twitchy about this this, thinking we were to profligate. So she wandered down to Lidl. Bought some basics (Heinz beans etc) came back home. She then checked it with Tescos on line and foudn Lidls was more expensive then Tescos. Then Ocado decided they were going to price match Tescos for named brands.... So We're back with Ocado again and as happy as we were before.

Aye, the added water means you don't need anything to drink and the glucose gives you energy smile
