Sorry if this subject has been covered before.
How do you tell from the description in an advert if the elise has the toyota engine? Obviously if you can see the engine bay it's a different story
thanks

I think if you look at the exhaust pipes that can help. I believe the toyota engined ones have circular exhausts and K-Series have oval. Of course there will be after market exhausts fitted to some cars though.

The Toyota engined cars have exhausts that exit below the diffuser, the K-series ones exit either side of the number plate.

The elise 111R and the current elise S have toyota engines

The original standard s2 elise and the 111s both have the K-series engines.

Both have their strengths.

I believe all of the Toyota powered cars exhausts exit through the underside of the rear diffuser. Rover models exit higher up through the rear of the car.

ETA: I guess this was an easy one- there was only one reply when I started this!!laugh

The grilles on the front clam where the air flows out from the radiator are much shallower on the Toyota cars. In other words the K series car has quite a deep cutaway in its front clam.

If there's a picture of the owner it helps... if they look smug but slightly worried, it's a K series. If they look smug but a tad too comfortable, it's a Toyota...

Ah i see.... Its a shame some "Elise" specialists cant supply the correct info.
Whilst looking for my first elise i was told that any elise after a certain date 2003 were fitted with Toyota engines. rolleyes Glad i didnt buy one from them in the end.

Yep - that's the best way of telling the difference, plus the service panels have a crease in them and sit higher (the space is needed for the ABS module IIRC) - the 'spine' that divides the radiator exit doesn't bisect the grilles on Toyota cars either.

Also look at the centre console - the 12V socket is between the seats in a Toyota car, in front of the gearstick in a K-series example. And of course the tacho goes up to 10 on a 111R, at least.

They started using Toyota engines from 2004, but still had some K series in MY04 cars, and then you have a few cars that were registered late.
Exhausts are the real giveaway as mentioned above.

I would imagine any 2004/2005 car would be advertised as a 111R, as the Toyota S came out much later?

I wasn't complaining about the spelling, rather the "appropriate" mis-use of the word.

I'm tempted to get an Elise, but after my bro-in-laws head gasket going after only 22,000 miles has put me off a K-Series slightly.
