If you've got Sky, just watch news channels from around the world, Russia Today is always interesting, as is France 24, and some of the female presenters/reporters are astonishing.

yes

There's also EuroNews, Al Jazeera (in English) and CCTV (China News). All are worth a glance.

What's your definition of "world news"? Does it exclude the US?

The reason why US news tends to be covered more than (say), Chinese news would be:

The US media is familiar to us
US personalities and celebrities are familiar to us
Their own media speaks English as its first language
They have the most powerful media and cultural influence in the world
What happens in American politics has a very direct influence on us here
If you are a correspondent, getting a posting to the US is always looked on as a bit of a perk

I think the BBC especially are obsessed with politics, as our MPs are on their summer break, and the US is coming up to election time, it's bound to happen at the moment.

As ever, people always single out the BBC for some odd reason. Much of the UK TV media have an interest in the US political scene. Look at Channel 4, who actually broadcast their main evening news last week live from the Republican Convention. There was no real need for that other than it lent an air of excitement to the broadcast. They did the same during the Democrat Convention a few weeks earlier.

You have to admit though, that American politics and politicians can be very exciting and colourful compared to our more drab version over here.

The truth is the UK media are obsessed with the US media, they long to be part of it and try and mirror US media ideas. They appear to think the UK public are just as obsessed as they are.

That America has to dress it up politics to such a degree says more about the American psyche than the true nature of the subject.

I have wondered this myself - I've also wondered why it is that the American election seems to be being covered so extensively...

Not a lot else going on? Plus, the election of the most powerful person in the Western world IS news.

It was ever thus. Read Charles Dickens' accounts of American politics in the 19thj Century.

I've always been interested in the US political scene and don't mind the coverage. I do think it was overly concentrating on Obama but the inclusion of Mrs Palin has certainly caused the media to swing their radars in the direction of the Republican Party (which is what the Republicans hoped it would do).

Perhaps because they've dragged us into two wars, so the media feels the need to keep an eye on them hehe

redcard Circular arguement.

It is the most powerful because our media continually broadcasts their rubbish.

Stop broadcasting it and their influence diminishes rapidly.

True, it IS news, but why is it being covered so comprehensively by the UK news. Ok, I am interested, but why is it that sometimes it's the only news on?

Because the only other news is that Gordon Brown has f***ed this country up beyond help with excessive tax and spend, selling off assets at their lowest prices, and getting us all into billions of pounds of debt on PFI contracts which will be coming back onto balance sheet soon and making the countries finances look as bad as they actually are for once.

Soooo, the BBC will keep to the Eco Warrior stuff and America to deflect it.

I'm fed up with the nightly spunking of the BBC's load all over Obama the Messiah.

I'm heartily glad Mrs Palin has also pulled in all the headlines around the world including some pretty pathetic leftist attempts to smear her. The BBC's bias is now plain for all to see.
