"Jimi Heselden had worked as a miner before losing his job in a wave of redundancies in the 1980s.
But the founder of the Leeds-based company, HESCO, went from strength-to-strength as the firm firstly worked on sand blasting buildings and metal structures.
In the late 1980s and early 1990s the firm diversified into manufacturing the bastion wire cages which made Mr Heselden a multi-millionaire.
From the company's Cross Green industrial estate base the metal baskets have been used across the globe for military defence work and other projects.
Mr Heselden is estimated to be worth £205m and was awarded an OBE in 2006"
Impressive.

Through my company I spent a day with the Red Arrows a couple of years ago, sat in on the mission briefing, watched them all day from the datum point, had lunch etc... Awesome stuff, and what a sound bunch of guys - completely ordinary, aside from one stereotypical bloke that drove an old DB5 - nice one

you lucky beggar!have done aerobatics in the bulldog as an air cadet but that is childs play compared to that!
i did have the opportunity for a passenger ride in the harrier one summer camp, but the weather and the plans of the harrier squadron conspired to deny me of it

I disagree actually.
There were 9 seats up for grabs. A trip an a Red Arrow can't usually be bought, so this could potentially be a once in a lifetime opportunity.
By being a millionairess she has effectively outbid anyone else who could maybe push to 10 or 20k for a red arrow flight.
I think its a shame that all 9 seats have gone to her.
Just my 2p.

It's a charity fund raising event, and the aim was therefore to raise the maximum amount, not to provide rides to people who could maybe push to 20k. Nine seats at even £20k (the original estimate I think) would have only been £180k, but this raised £1.5m. There were 9 seats up for grabs. I had the pleasure of meeting / flying with two of the guys who are part of the team, Bernard Charbonnel and Francois Ponsot back in 2000 during a formation flying training weekend in France. Top blokes.

She doesn't want to go up in one of the planes, she is going to give them away to friends. It went for £1m not £1.5m, total amount raised was £1.5m
Apparently there was one place up for auction which was going to go for 40-50k, she said if I can have all nine seats I will offer £1m.
The single seat was bid to £200k I think - then she offered £1m for all of them.Apparently there was one place up for auction which was going to go for 40-50k, she said if I can have all nine seats I will offer £1m.

That is providing they pass the medicals!
The medical consists of a little tick box form, height, weight, heart condition type thing it really isn't a big deal. It's actually more likely that they'll fall outside of the fairly narrow height and weight restrictions for the seat. But any "normal" person without any obvious conditions would be medically fit enough.Gassing Station | The Pie & Piston Archive | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
