How old are you?
3-4 months? Under 25? Dump the van, join the youth hostel association and an buy an interail ticket. I spent months on the trains when I was younger and if you have a good bunch of mates, it's a great way to see Europe (and make many a random mate on the way).
As for where? Follow your nose. Plans will only give you deadlines - you're travelling

am 23 and misis is 20 , but i doubt very much she would even think about youth hostels or what ever you call them , the van has bed and cooking avalible in it anyway , and money for hotels isnt a problem .3-4 months? My friend and I are planning on driving Europe in the next couple of years, maybe ferry across to Norway, Sweden, Finland, down thru Russia then through Eastern Europe, Poland (particularly want to go there, had a Polish great uncle who was a prisoner of war in WW2, released after war and came back to his British girlfriend, my great aunt, who thought she'd never see him again), Down to Turkey, then back across to Greece, Italy, Switz and Germany, stop off at the ring on the way.
Thinking of doing this in my trusty bm. work out what the fuel will cost and put it aside as an expense. A grand in fuel is nothing compared to the experience and memories of doing something like that with a best mate.
We might do France, Spain, Morocco first though.
After Europe... Further East? Could make my car the most travelled E36 ever...
