I'm considering making a home studio for portraiture purposes - head and shoulder shots, and photos of the new nipper (when he/she finally arrives) - and have been told that the Elinchrom D-Lite 4 set is one to look at.

I know little about flash photography, and was wondering if any of you guys had used them, or would recommend an other setup?

Budget is £500ish. To be connected to a 1Ds 3 (possibly wirelessly).

I use Elinchrom (Prolinca and Style) and they're common enough - Warehouse Express etc sell them and you can find s/f ones on eBay etc. I also use the Skyport RF trigger (which is a bit poncey but cheaper than Pocket Wizards) and a cheapo Chinese back-up which so far has proved fool-proof.

I'd suggest you try to get as much power range as possible so you can experiment with aperture and distance - my set-up goes from 12W to 400W. If you want shallow DOF and your synch is 1/250th, the problem can be too much light!
