We all have to sit and listen to her constantly talk about herself and how wonderful she is but if I mention anything to do with my plans she doesn't understand because she's never lived anywhere apart from this small village

whats the working relationship? i.e. what roles do you both have?

there's a couple of people in my office i don't like and it is mutual, but they way things are set up i can get away with letting them know it quite regularly. the polite attitiude gets old after a while

My mate used to call these people 'crates'.

As in, if you had an elephant, he had a crate big enough to put it in.
