Vipers in the UK

I met a chap out here with a modified RCA Viper who tells me that in the UK they have been restricted to 390bhp or something, is this true? (his has 500bhp)

surprising if true ... I thought it was usually the other way round, i.e. US models sacrificing performance in order to meet stricter emmissions rules

I think the Viper was too wide for English roads ! I followed one to our favourite pub, and he was petrified of going over 45 on these country roads for fear of clipping an oncoming car ! Not sure about the power though. Why should it be limited?

I was under the impression that all Vipers had about 400 BHP, regardless of their destination, and could be tuned up?

According to the (many) Viper fans who post on the supercars.net messageboards the American version has less power to meet emission regulations. I did read this in a TVR forum so they might be making excuses.

naah, don't want one but the one I was in went like f**k and looked nice too. I meant the racing ones, which this was, are supposedly restricted in the UK according to the owner

UK vipers are about 50bhp down on US models, by means of a restrictor in the airbox, extra mufflers at the rear and a reprogrammed ECU. All for a quiter sound, this can be put right easily, and there are plenty of mods for even more HP. Luckily mine is US spec, so I don't have those problems, 450 for US GTS
