Hi Guys

Hoping that I dont have to take the gearbox out .confused
Would anyone know if its normal for this clutch package to chatter ??? Think thats the right word or to be more frank sounds like a bag of bolts jingling around at idle . When you push the clutch pedal in the noise stops , its a bit over whelming at idle too. Crap sound... furious not too loud mind.
Anyone with first hand advice and knowledge ?????

Cheers

Most tripple and twin cluches (Carbon or sinter) chatters when you have the clutch engaged (pedal to the floor). When you put the transaxle in neutral and let go of the pedal the noice stops. If it's the other way around then you might have a problem frown

Hi Mikael

Are you the bearer of bad news this weekend ....???bangheadbanghead
On mine the noise goes away when I push the pedal in, when its idling in neutral, with foot off, its noisy . What do you think it could be ???

Oh yeh , how did the torsion bars come out , have you tested them yet ???
Not too shabby at drifting in the rain bud. We would realy like to see more
clips on your GTR on here or You Tube, SOUND AWESOME.

Hope you have a theory on my clutch gremlin.

All the way from Africa.tumbleweed

I might have good news... smile Is it a pull or push release? How well aligned are the release bearing and the clutch? Can it be the release bearing that just touches and chatters agains the clutch springs? If you depress the pedal so the bearing just touches the face of the clutch does it stop the sound? or do you have to press all the way untill the clutch releases before the sound stop?

The anti sway bars works good. Easy to dial in the car and much less roll. The only problem so far was that last time on the track a ball joint snapped straigt off. The ball on the broken bearing allmost didn't move at all. Must be some kind of manufacturing fault. so I guess it was due to that the threded part of it snapped. Just took one of the knives off and continued the track day untill the rain came. So great to be able to tune the balance of the car and if it starts to rain just unhook them and the car has great wet tracktion. As great as it gets with bald Kumhos smile

Its a Tilton hydraulic release bearing that pushes the fingers.....The bearing sits on the face of clutch fingers all the time , and all lines up perfectly. The noise only stops once the pedal is depressed and clutch is engaged.
Im hoping you have seriously good news.bounce

Many multi-plate clutch packs will rattle if they are not under load - I wouldn't worry about it too much.

If you've ever ridden a Ducati with a dry clutch on it then you will have heard the noises before...

I assume you're running a G50 flavor transaxle? If so, I have some good news. In talking to CMS they confirm that my G50/52 should be noisy in idle with the clutch pedal out. When I push it to the floor, the noise goes away. It sounds like the gears loosely revolving and was kind of concerning at first until I confirmed the noise as normal.

^ I agree with all above, I too have a triple plate clutch and it does as you say, takes a bit of getting used to, but it is quite normal yes
I don't mind mechanical noise so long as I know that it SHOULD be there.
One thing worth mentioning is that this type of clutch does not like to be ridden, so no resting your foot on the pedal, get a clutch foot rest fitted wink.

No its a G96/88 from a GT2/GT3 , its a six speed , cable shift box with built in oil pump for cooling . I also had steel synchro's fitted and all internals were cryogenicly treated and shot peened.
All a bit loud when on the road so I can honestly say I havn't heard the noise under normal driving. driving

Your Transaxle sounds like a good spec and you have made some sensible modifications. I like the idea of a six speed box but went for a five speed with altered ratios in the GTW. A pal of mine used to have a CanAm ( I try not to tell too many people that though wink ) with a 4 speed box from a 930 turbo and it was really well suited to his 500+BHP 383. The only thing that appeals to me about a sixth gear is a low cruise rpm.

Hey Wayne

This " BLICK" WILDERBEAST has definetly got my ear tuned in to any strange sounds , my nerves must be shot. Just paranoid about doing it all spot on.
Trust me if its the norm I'm happy, hehe the thought of taking the box out so soon .....makes me want to....hurl
^ Foot rest ^ Im using the passenger rest at the mo. till I figure that one out , so as to make it look like the real deal.thumbup

With the traffic on the roads over there a sixth gear could be a waste for a low cruise rpm , yet over here there's miles of nothing , picture a pin straight road that disapears in the distance as a point with a heat shimmer over it. tumbleweed
Yeh , thats exactly why I wanted it. I did change the 1 st gear to peek at +/- 55mph , just makes it right with this much hp.yes

I have a full set of altered ratios in my G50-03 and with a shift point @ 7,200 rpm the speeds from 1st up are 74, 102, 137, 174 and 213 mph although I have not yet maxed it out. I am really pleased with my ratios and only hope the transaxle can live with 600 + lbsft of torque as I think this will be the killer if anything.
As you are probably well aware, our roads here in Blighty are anything BUT long straight and empty but if you are prepared to get up early, there is still plenty of fun to be had yes

I guess it's probably your gearbox that makes the sound, not the clutch. I don't know if that's good or bad news. judge

My Porsche 964RS had a "normal" flywheel and racing clutch (on-off type)and not the dual mass flywheel which was the source of BIG problems in the early Carrera's of the 90's . It made a lot of racket in neutral. Very similar to what is described here. Pretty sure must be a thread talking about this with the Porkers.

Thanks to all of you that replied.beer Its great to talk to people in the know.
Think I'll follow up this thread with a call to Roger Brown at California Motorsport. I'll let you know his view.

Just in , from some more experts.......biggrinbounce

What you are most likely hearing are the gears in the transmission
that rattle as the input shaft speed goes up and down with the repeated
action of accelerating as a cylinder fires, the input shaft slows as the
next cylinder comes up on compression, and on goes the cycle. I doubt that
the clutch is making the noise. However, I did not say the clutch was not
involved.
This is a clutch and flywheel setup designed first and foremost for
high horsepower applications where light weight for racing is also a main
design goal. In pure OE applications they use sprung hubs and match the
rotating mass precisely to the needs of the car to prevent gear chatter at
idle. Designing for that would make the system heavier and less able to
withstand high horsepower applications.
Some have found that the rattling is minimized or eliminated when
the transmission oil is changed because it is old or when they want to go to
a good, high-quality lubricant, which would not be a bad idea if you have
increased the power output. I see no need based on what you have told me to
remove the transmission. However, if you have not done so recently, it
might be a good time to change the transmission oil .

Sooooo.......... sounds even better, still want to speek to Roger Brown. clap
