This problem started yesterday, when i started the engine i discovered an unusual ticking noise. Ive now discovered that the noise begins at around the 1200rpm mark and goes away above and below that. Its heard better inside the car with the doors closed. The noise sounds like something ticking/grinding. Its hard to describe. The car is a 2004 MK5 golf (1.4fsi). Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated and if you have any more questions i'll try my best to answer. The car was serviced a week ago by VW.
I recently switched from shell V-power unleaded to tesco super unleaded. I put in £20 of tesco unleaded and it has run 11 miles on it. Could this be a problem? Never used tesco before on this car.

There is a world of difference between ticking and grinding. The ticking noise you mentioned could be the car pinking due to the fuel but I doubt changing the fuel type would have a great deal of difference on your engine type..I maybe wrong though!

What did they do on the last service? Have you checked all your belts to see if they are tight/loose? Does it have a cambelt or a camchain?

well its more ticking. the last service was a full service. anything that they could change, they did, excluding the cambelt. the belts seem to be intact from what i can see without messing with the engine. Could it be a valve failure? as the gear changes were jerky before uswel

been told by a local mechanic that its a loose screw in the dashboard somewhere. think im going to have to take it to VW as the noise will eventually drive me mad. seems like all mk5's arent very well built together inside as this is one of many noises.
