Is my sis's corsa poorly?!!
Discussion
Just given my sisters 1997 1.2 petrol Corsa a quick service (oil change, filter, plugs) while she's on holiday. Just gone to re-fill the car with fresh oil and noticed this yellow gunge around the oil filler opening.
Any ideas whether it's serious or not and what can be done to remedy it? don't have much to do with her car so I don't know much about how it's been maintained.
Any info gladly recieved!!!

Mayonaise in the filler cap
A sign the water is getting in the oil
could be OK if she only does short trips (condensation doesn't get chance to burn off and a little moisture is almost always present in the engine in that case)
More probably the head gasket is on it's way out (although it could be any oil/water boundary (like a crack in the block))
Were all the plugs the same colour when you serviced it, did you do a compression test ?

Yeah the plugs looked OK when they came out. Haven't done a compression test. Moisture in the oil rings a bell now that you mention it, I thought I'd heard something about gunge in the oil before somewhere but couldn't remember what.
I think it's probably the head gasket as she's been complaining about a very slight oil leak, I'll change it ASAP. I'm assuming I should scrape out as much of the 'mayo' as I can before refilling the engine.

Don't forget to get the head checked for flat before you put a new gasket on, also make sure that is is the head gasket you should be able to tell if it's been blowing (look especially between the oil and water ways) when you inspect the head/block when the head's off
Yes scrape out the mayo but don't worry too much, it'll be back within a week

Just take it for a bloody good thraping down the M1. Gets the engine good and hot: unsticks stuck things, burns off 'stuff', eliminates mayonnaise, clears out the pipes and generally is A Good Thing for engines that pootle around town all the time. Me Julie's Punto runs much better ever since she started getting a good seeing-to in this fashion. The Punto, that is... although Julie doesn't do too badly for lovin' with me around.... ... even though she has to drive 150 miles for it. Hence the good thraping aforesaid.
Oh dear, too much Port, I'm off to bed...
