Does anybody know if these things can go bad ???
I've got a Canon IXUS 850IS which I have had for 18months along with a 2GB sandisk SD Card. Twice in the past month, the camera has suddenly lost the ability to take photos/display previous photos. When I place the card in my PC it appears totally corrupt - any ideas what may be causing this ? Could the card have just become a bit dodgy and is in need of replacement ???

Yup. Flash memory has a finite life (millions of cycles), so will fail eventually. Also sensitive to corrupt and failure like any other form of electrics kit. You could try formating the card in the camera to start fresh (NOT in your PC), but I wouldn't trust it again. They are disposable these days anyway.
