Hi i recently bought a 2002 a4 quattro sport and am interested in a remap. It's the 2.5V6tdi 180bhp version. I was told by a friend to be careful with this engine as it is already mapped differently to the 163bhp version (?)

Anybody have further information on this? What are the potential problems, what are the safe limits for the engine? I currently get around 400miles to a full tank. Will the mpg change much?

The figures i have found are:
BHP : 180bhp > 208bhp
TORQUE : 370NM > 415NM

The remap is only around £300, but is it worth is for an extra 28bhp and 45NM torque?

Cheers,

Mark

i have a 180 2.5tdi Quattro Sport which is remapped.
Overall just OK i would say its a bit of a lottery engine, you either get a good one or a bad one.

My issues with the engine were not the lack of power more how it was delivered, the turbo spools at 1800rpm and you had to ride the clutch to come out of a junction with any speed, not good. so that's why i went for the remap to get the turbo to spool earlier and aid smoothness.

Big limiting factor on this engine is the Fuel Injection Pump, its rated to 210bhp, so you will see tuners specifying 208bhp usually. And if that pump fails your looking at a four figure sum to replace it, yes they are that dear!

Dont get me wrong, its a good engine just not a great one. then again i came from a coupe quattro to this so i am missing it still... sniff

Economy, have seen 552 miles from a tank on a long run, ie aberdeen-york-holiday- and nearly home again! but it remains much the same. i have had 2 remapped cars previously and they usually see better off economy provided your easier with the right foot. the 1.8T offered the biggest gain, used to get 33-34mpg on runs, even 3 years on and 100k later it still does 37-38mpg on runs. So if you want to justify it, it will pay itself back in economy provided you do long drives...

If you have never owned/ gone from a standard to a remapped car its not the power figures that you are concerned with its the delivery, taking the torque lower down and it makes the car so much more drivable/responsive. Oh and DO make sure the car is in full working order BEFORE you start. The boost control solenoid is also notorious on this car, the N75 the get sticky but are cheapish to replace.

Check with your tuner, ask for a graph to see where it spools, does it increase only after 1800 or does it spool earlier?

starperformance in fife have a good reputation for VAG's, next time, i will probably go down that route.

Thanks for the replies. I do roughly 30k a year, so economy is fairly important. If i lost say 50miles per tank then it's around £700 worth of diesel. Likewise if i were to gain 50miles. The engine "feels" solid but i would get that checked out properly before any mapping.

You make a good point about pulling away from junctions. Although the engine is generally good and surprisingly responsive for a diesel i have nearly been caught out pulling from a roundabout in 2nd gear.

I owned a Leon Cupra R and drove a friend's remapped Leon Cupra - although the performance between the two was almost identical i definitely noticed a difference in the way the power was delievered. The Cupra was a lot smoother, yet didn't feel as fast as the Standard Cupra R.

Istoo - Does the car drive much differently? i.e. does it feel noticeably faster or just smoother. From your post i assume you would recommend a remap if done properly?

in a nutshell.. yes. But do shop around for who is well rated, the same guys appear over and over again.

If your doing that sort of mileage just look after it more often. another biggy is the long life servicing programme, i am NOT a fan, i would rather change the oil at least every 10k not 20.. already blew a turbo in a previous car from clogged long life gunked up feeding plumbing.

The 2.5tdi can be a good one, i have seen some folk have HUGE issues that never get resolved, yet see others do effortless 100k with out batting an eyelid. hence the its a good engine but not a great one. you might have a great one, i cant tell!

The late spool has caught me out as well, i had a coupe quattro previously and used to pulling out in second as well, also own a remapped 1.8T (in an A6 avant) and its a corker.

Performance before and after, mine is quicker but seems to be more on the top end oddly rather than that huge 2000rpm surge. Its still quick, gives me a regular 475 out of a tank, doesnt vary much, nurse it an i can get over 500, give it beans everywhere and get 420 as the worst ever. So the economy is fairly constant regardless of driving style. The junction performance (live near the grampians in scotland) and MPG where my main reasons. Having had great results with 1.8T's previously. the bigger engines dont give you a huge rise but its big enough.

Thanks for the advice. Having owned the LCR i used to change oil every 5k so regular servicing is no problem. I haven't had this car long enough to even bother with any of that yet.
My priority for this week is the brakes, just had the (O) brakes symbol come up and plugged it into VAGCom and got no results, but the back pads look a bit thin so going to have it looked at (or do it myself). Any ideas if it's not pads?

The remap will have to wait a week or two, i know of two reputable places fairly local (Middlesbrough) so might pop in and speak to somebody in the next week or so and see what's what.

Do you know of any other A4 forums? I haven't stumbled across many decent ones, infact this sub-forum on pistonheads has been the best so far

Good choice of car, i've had one for 3yrs and love it - haven't bothered with a remap though. I'd recomend Tyresmoke forums as a good source of info, there's definitly a few threads on remaping the 2.5 180.
