Sat here watching it raining instead of harvesting my crops, just wondered how many farmers are on Ph and if they are as far behind and fed up with the weather as i am. I know it is unusual to hear a farmer whinging wink but this bl00dy weather is ridiculous . shout WE WANT SUNSHINE..........please

Have a good laugh. Then wait a few weeks and see the price of the bread rise as the supermarkets have to pay 1p more per tonne to the farmers and pass that on to the customers as 1p per loaf.

Everyone knows that that can only be done when it's time to plough the fields, pig farmers excepted!

If you're an expert in the field (sorry) of crops, such that you can reasonably predict what effect the weather of the last few weeks will have on the harvest of the next few weeks, then surely you're in a position to have a pretty safe punt on grain/wheat/etc. prices? I'd be setting-up a spread-betting account and going long on crops if I were you.

For any given amount of land how do the rewards for the different farming methods compare (livestock vs crops vs dairy v anything else).
I suspect coca, marijuana and opium poppies are a good bet.

Crikey, it changes every year. 2 years ago cereals (wheat & barley not cornflakes) where a dead loss, then last year the price went crazy and doubled, but now fertilizers and fuel have shot up and grain prices have come down. Milk and beef prices are good at the mo'. The cost of growing a crop has probably doubled in last 12months which is a spoiler tho. Ferrari order is on hold at the moment, smile

How much sun in days do you need before the harvest may commence?

We could say a prayer.

Please ask for 2 dry sunny days to get things underway again and then another 10 good days to get the job done. We will then require rain (but not to much) at various intervals, preferably on sat night to get our new drilled crops growing and as my grandad used to say.."a shower of 5h1t on Sunday" (not on our icecream parlour tho).

Fussy bugger, no wonder farmings a pretty marginal way of life. British weather's never been that helpful.

What is the cool tractor to have at the moment?

Do farmers go cruising in the village with their tractors?

It's not the weather, it's the damn Chinese eating all the wheat. And the EU paying farmers not to grow anything.

What if the sunny days just don't arrive? How long until you get desperate? Would you finally have to harvest in the wet? Is that at all possible? Or do you just plough it all back in to the earth?

Apologies in advance for the niavety of the questions. I'm genuinely interested but I suffer from being a Londoner.

According to the Beeb last week, we are having an 'average' British summer, with 'average' rainfall.

Not sure where they get their bleddy figures from, but I don't think it was on my patch, in the Midlands. Probably some warm enclave darn sarf.

How do the Chinese eat wheat? I've never had anything made out of wheat when in China. Or milk. Don't think they're keen on the stuff.
