Looks like even the bad guys' data isn't safe

More data lost
Do those people that are in favour of ID cards still think "If you've nothing to hide you've nothing to fear"?

I'm amazed that this information is ever held anywhere without being encrypted.
There's enough encryption methods out there that would defeat all but the most determined. It should never be on a memory stick in an unencrypted form.
And the government still says that data for an ID card system will be perfectly safe with them, Yeah right. Twunts, the lot of them

I was just telling Mrs Z, how many people who are against ID cards have stuffed their entire pathetic lives on facebook or one of the other privately owned databases sitting out there for everyone to see!
Not to mention those who refuse an ID card, but are happy to carry a card telling the owners of supermarkets everything they buy, where they buy it from, how much they spend on it, and how often!

The difference is choice I suppose....Not to mention those who refuse an ID card, but are happy to carry a card telling the owners of supermarkets everything they buy, where they buy it from, how much they spend on it, and how often!

...And they don't lose things like the govt do.
You think?!
It isn't just what items you bought. There are hundreds of places that accept these same loyalty cards these days, and some people even link them to their bank accounts and credit cards! I've had a good look at the Tesco Clubcard database, and it is a entrance into an awesome collection of data about a large proportion of people in the country. Very clever, and very useful!

Why TF do these Gov't offices need to put data on memory sticks and laptops etc anyway?
Secure data should not be allowed to be copied to a medium where it could be lost or misused.
Yes indeed the really BIG question is just where are the checks and restrictions to control "anybody" plugging their stick in and loading it up in the first place.Secure data should not be allowed to be copied to a medium where it could be lost or misused.

In theory, huge databases of products you buy are no issue. Until you start appearing on the reports of customers who buy X number of units of alcohol a week, X number of cigarettes etc

I would advise against linking supermarket clubcards etc. with your bank accounts but I don't mind my shopping habits being monitored. In fact I have a Tesco clubcard and the advantage is that
YOU GET
COUPONS
It saves you money and clubcard is free.
National ID cards cost the tax payer money and you don't get coupons.

I've had enough this week of 'security'. I needed a reference number from a Govt dept, after answering six or seven of their idiotic/bizarre security questions. divulging much personal information: full name, full d.o.b. full address, memorable persons name, memorable place, town of birth, favourite ice cream, colour of underwear... I was informed 'We can't give you that information over the phone for security reasons' ARGH!
So phoned another company who I knew would have the number, they can't give it out because sometimes the Government get it wrong(!?!), and they could give me someone elses in error!!
So it's being trusted to the post office, and will arrive in 7-10 days...
And today i've recieved yet another letter regarding someone who is intent on giving my address everytime he jumps the train...
He was due in court on the 6th for several offences, jumped the train again two days later (in fact in court the rep was told this person was actually in prison!) Was told not to worry as nothings been actioned against my address...yet.
Someone somewhere is using my address and various/false names to commit these offences. This has to be one of the plus' for ID cards imo.
