M5 v 535d on M4 last night J8/9 to J12
Discussion
Well well was very very late getting home last night from the office and around the junctions mentioned above there was a silver M5 V10 and a carbon black 535d M Sport - lets say "having some fun!"
There was only the 3 of us on the road & I took no part in it just stayed out of their way they kept slowing to about 40mph then flooring it (M5 sounding great), from what I could see there wasnt that much in it.
Im wondering if it was something like what some Youtubers do on the web in Germany cars side by side and go for different speed increments.
On one time they slowed i wasn in 3rd at 70 leptons and floored it in the fast lane passed them by some margin - didnt last though as the M5 came literally screaming past with the 535d on its rear.
Good honest harmless fun. Note when they came to any junctions on the M4 they slowed down to NSL or under it.
Which did I prefer? Well the noise of the M5 was addictive but that 535d wasnt far behind at all so I'm guessing that may have been a slightly modified example.
I wonder if a BMW 123d would try their luck against an M5, one that had a tuning box giving it 265bhp & 500Nm.

BTW - that's good old fashioned roll racing. Very big and popular in the States and really is a test of which car is fastest.Welshbeef said:

Didn't take any part in it :Welshbeef said:

Anyway, their fun would have only been complete with a 335d (mapped).300bhp/ton said:

Didnt see /recall seeing any smoke from the 535d under full load (probably due to the DPF).
Both cars squatted down when they went for it - you could see who got the better reaction time or maybe the more instant urge of the torque at a specific rpm.
I'd love both cars - neither are bad both have fantastic performance one has amazing sound the other much better efficiency.
One thing I'd say though is that from the rear the 535d looked better IMHO over the double twin exhaust of the M5 more discreat.
The relative squat showed that the M5 squat less than the 535d - but not by that much.
Ive heard that someone else PHer has shown someone in an S6 that N/a loses out to Modified RS6 mid range along a similar area. Very enjoyable to watch.

You are joking, right? Good though 123D's are, tuned or otherwise, an M5 would still annihilate it completely. But yes, V10 M5's do sound amazing
P,
Not as quick as a sub 10 second car to 100mph though no question, but its fun playing

Must resist....no I can't!!.. Cor imagine if it'd been a 335d. He would have left that M5 standing
lol - I think the chap with one might have gone a little OTT but clearly he loves his vehicle so good on him for that, you get similar quotes on other threads i.e. Fabia vRS's racing and beating 330d's (current shape) or destroying Civic Type R's or Focus ST's.Welshbeef said:

I'll admit to not being able to keep up with a mate in his 2.0 n/a MR2 in my supposedly 350bhp GTS!

I was also using a BMW - K1200S with a few extras.
All i can say is Jeeeeezzzzuuuuss that car is fast.
I couldn't hear it mind!
20mph upwards through the gears after joing the road.
Have to say up to 100 it was holding me up - lots. But from then on................ to 155 where I pulled up and went by.
He was alone in car on the Autobahn out of Lux towards Frankfurt.
I had full panniers on and wet weather kit flapping in the breeze.
We then slowed down and did it all over again. Twice. Just to make sure.
Don't you love no speed limits, empty roads and decent lane discipline?
I don't think a diesel BMW of any sorts would be near to the acceleration the M5 had. Truly, truly impressed.

I'm not entirely surprised to hear the 535d was close at UK speeds. At Autobahn speeds, the M5 is mind-blowing. When you have to slow from 140 to 100 mph because somebody pulls out in front of you to overtake slower traffic and then pulls back in, the way the car moves from 100 back to 140 is astonishing. Just took car lengths out of a 1200cc bike with a full race system (intake and exhaust) ecu to match and ported heads.
I'd like to have another fly-by, but without the luggage and in a one piece suit. Just for curiosity sakes.
I spend a lot of time on tracks, fast roads and the nurburgring on bikes, I have never come across anything that pulled like that car did at those speeds. Simply incredible for a large four door car.
(yes, I know they exist - just haven't seen them, or had a driver willing to give it the full berries)
