What a race! Hi Fi at full tilt. Red clothing head to toe. Schumie delivers.
On the victory lap Villenueve passes Schumacher and Schumacher waves.
"Nice to see Villenueve giving the thumbs up.......at least I hope it was his thumb".
Must be tons of classics.........so.........let's have 'em.

yep, it was a dull race in my view, Montoya drove fantastically again. Shame frentzen screwed him up. Also ive had amny people asking me what engine sauber run, its a ferrari engine isnt it? But in the sauber garage, on the walls with all the sponsoring i saw mercedes-benz stickers!? Also, Marc Gene did an awesome job, lets hope BMW-Williams can keep the pressure on ferrari.
Tediously dull race IMO.
This season has been pretty good in terms of racing, especially the British GP, but that was dull as a very dull thing. I don't care how much James Allen witters on about it, but casual viewers AREN'T INTERESTED in pit strategy and tyre compounds. This is supposed to be RACING, not chess.....

Yawn, boring, yawn .
As mentioned earlier the only piece of racing was MS and JPM in the first corner, after that a tedious procession.
Did anybody else notice the marshals waving the blue flags at Gene when MS was catching him?
What's wrong with that you ask?
Well, Gene was in the lead at the time!

For many years the BBC used to only show the highlights of each GP - the exceptions being Monaco, Britain and Italy. Murray used to watch the race live either at the venue or in the BBC studios in London and then do his coometary already knowing the outcome.
The most obvious example of this technique is his commentary on the fantastic wheel banging race between Gilles Villeneuve and Rene Arnoux at the 1979 French GP. Because Walker added the commentary later, he came across relatively subdued. If he had really been commentating live he would have had a seizure. In 1979 he had no assistant in the commentary box either to reign him in. Hunt joined the BBC team in 1980.

I agree with those who rate this race as dull. Martin summed it up at the end when he said (and I'm not quoting) it was was full of promise but failed to deliver on it.
Lots of almost battles, Montoya almost caught Schumi, Kimi almost caught Rubens, Coulthard chickened out and parked rather than be caught and passed by a test driver!
So, 3 points in it and a circuit that should suit the Williams best next. Oh, and a circuit that I will be at! Can't wait!

Gavyn, I'm going to try and get myself to Indianapolis so I can stick on my scarlet t-shirt and give scheuy some support - do you know what the deal is with getting tickets? I think I remember reading before that in previous years the biggest problem has been getting a hotel room?
Back on topic, I thought it was a good race in terms of the sheer tension created by watching Schuey and Montoya going round at full pelt for the entire length of the race. One mistake would have decided it.
Cheers,
Chris

F1 - the motor sport for people who don't like motor racing.
Ok Eric, I'll have F1 and you can have all the rest then
MaranelloUK - you were looking for quotes on the race? I reckon the best must've been Schumacher thanking the cleaning lady at Maranello - all the other teams will be clamouring to find her secret...

Some of Murray's finest.
"There are a lot of IFs in Formula One, in fact IF is Formula One backwards!"
"Barrichello, when asked yesterday how he thought he would go tomorrow, which is now today..."
"And will Jacques Villeneuve be racing with Williams next year? Well, we will only know that in the future."
"I should imagine that the conditions in the cockpit are unimaginable!"
"And remember that Jacques Villeneuve is a sick man."
And of course - "I'll stop my startwatch"
You just can't write a script like that

One of the best moments recently (which almost everyone seened to miss) was Martin's gridwalk in Hungary. Trying to grab an interview with Mark Webber, third on the grid, he's looking all around the car, and spotting an umbrella in the cockpit, he says "he can't be under that can he?"
Nav Sidhu, Jaguar press man is standing nearby and kindly pipes up "He's on the pisser!"
"Err, thanks there..."

Don't get me wrong. I will allways follow F1 but, at the moment (and for the past few years) the quality of the "racing" has been pretty poor. I only have to look at some of the videos I have of from the 80s and up to the mid 90s to see much better racing.
Also, I am concerned about the poor grids (20 cars only lined up on Sunday). I grew up with 26 cars being the norm and the grid just looks empty these days. OK, I know the back rows were always a bit pathetic but they provided interest and something for the front runners to negotiate.
I am not impressed too much by the technology in F1 or the size of the budgets or the facilities at the venues. All these attributes seem to be what Bernie and the teams aspire to and they expect that these things are what will impress the fans. No doubt, some fans are impressed by such extravagances but I rather think that the diminishing TV audiences indicates that something fundamental is lacking in the product.
And before anyone says that this year's championship is good - well, it is a distinct improvement over last year. But to be honest, last year was so poor, ANYTHING seems better in comparison.
A reality check for F1 is WAY overdue.
