Plane overshoots runway @ Madrid airport

Just seen the Breaking News on BBC News 24

A plane has overshot the runway at Madrid Barajas airport (Terminal 4) and 'deaths are feared'.

That flight should be an Airbus A321. Interesting that it happened on take-off...

They are saying its an engine fire, I doubt that could cause an aircraft to crash. They could have stopped I.E before V1 and if not they could have taken off I.E after V1. Well I think thats right

These things never normally come down to 1 thing though do they. It'll be Engine fire = problem 1 and some other unknown problem which left the plane unable to deal with problem 1.

Indeed, engine fire in an MD-82 would give you serious issues with rear control surfaces, plus having to very quickly deal with a thrust imbalance - recipe for disaster...
