Ok, some opinions please.

Am looking at getting back into Photography. Used to be pretty good, had my own darkroom etc, but we are talking about 15 years ago.
I am thinking of getting a digital SLR, good for the hobby photographer. I have no real brand alegiance, actually have always favoured Olympus cameras in the past but that does not really matter.

Spending about £6-700, hopefully with more than just a standard lens. Going to Dubai and Tokyo before the end of the year so may buy abroad if that gets me more kit.
Have been looking at the Nikon d60 and Canon eso 400. I would be a complete beginner at Photoshop, so something that takes the best natural photos would be ideal... redface) tall order i know.

I can only help in that I recently got a Nikon D80 with the kit lens (18-135mm) and a 70-300mm lens in Dubai for AED 5,200 - which was around GBP 720 ish.

Canon are doing 400d's with akit lens for around £250 on the Canon ebay outlet. They are listed as refurbs but at a guess they are surplus stock as the 400d has now been replaced.

I really must stop pratting about and just buy one.

Slightly on topic but wandering a bit here. Does anybody know of any online shops in UAE / Dubai for cameras and gear? I was brought a couple of 8gb Sandisk cards home from Dubai last week and apparantly their shops are mucho cheaper than here. Even with delivery and tax it looks like it would make sense.

To add some completely on-topic points. I recently won a Canon 450d in a competition and it was a great upgrade from a Nikon D40 ( a great total beginner piece of kit ). I so far only have the kit 18-55mm lens but I waiting on a delivery of a 55-250IS so hoping that will compliment what I have nicely. I think a similar set-up might do for you.

Forget about Tokyo for buying your camera. Japan has never been cheap, but when I was there in May the sale prices in Akihabara were similar to the regular prices in the UK

Ahhh forget the 2x zoom thing, its utterly meaningless!!

Whats the focal range (mm) and the speed (apperture values, f4.5-5.6 etc).

Tamron make good and bad lenses, as do sigma, and canon... Treat each one as an individual..

Yeah for 260 it looks it.

Neither lens is anything to get excited about but there definatly usable, that'll be a canon 55-200.

You bidding on pack I linked to?

Just my input....forget Dubai for anything to do with electronics goods.

It's very often more expensive than the prices in Europe.....US is the way to go....
