Doesnt suprise me for a second. The way the busses drive around those roads is appauling. The majority are small country roads, only just wide enough for 2 cars to pass safely. The coaches and busses that frequent these roads often drive straight down the middle, making cars mount verges to allow it through.

The section of road that the bus crashed on is a straight piece of road, not bends. It narrows at this point and so is likely the bus driver or car driver fancied his/her luck and this is the end result. The roads were never designed to have giant coaches traveling over them. I'm suprised this hasnt happened sooner.

About time Alton Towers built the Alton Bypass.

I know Alton well, and the amount of traffic that go's through it, it amazes me that there isn't one every week.

Very sad though.

Agreed. I drive the A52 every morning and evening. The 7th most dangerous road in the country. It joins the traffic coming from Alton Towers at one point and you'd swear the people pulling out of that junction think 'Yeah, car coming, but not Rita Queen Of Speed so should be ok to go'. Crazy buggers. Lethal roads around there.

Ach, not good at all frown

I have to say, I was on a bus, a stagecoach express, for the first time in years a few weeks ago.

The bus was pretty much empty, and I only had a short journey, so I sat at the front for a good view out the window. All I can say is that for the next 10 mins, I witnessed some truly appalling driving - by the bus driver.

I glanced behind me at the few old dears sat there, and they were absolutely oblivious - probably just as well really.

Quite shocking, to be honest.

I was once heading down an NSL dual carriageway out of Cardiff, about 10pm in the height of winter. It's absolutely hammering it down with rain, I'm doing about 0.8 leptons and I start to get a bit nervous about visibility. Just as I'm about to ease off I get overtaken - by the bloody Megabus, the driver must've been insaneyikes

Nope, there is (was?) a Nemesis at Alton - I stood for over an hour to get on the bloody thing when I was a kid!

Edit: The nemesis joke above was poor form.

i believe they have been trying to have one built with the support of the local villages for quite some time, but it is held up over land issues.

Alton bypass discussions continuing
Tuesday, 22nd January 2008

The owners of Alton Towers are meeting with local residents to discuss plans for the long-awaited bypass.

The £6m road, which has been under proposal for decades, would ease congestion through villages such as Alton during the theme park's open season.

The problem is largely due to the park's remote location, meaning that roads currently leading to it are mostly narrow, winding country lanes. The new road would run from Denstone and significantly lower the amount of traffic going through local villages.

Previous attempts to come to an agreement over the bypass have stalled for a variety of reasons. Staffordshire County Council ruled in 2004 that no public money would go towards the project, which meant that Alton Towers and their owners would have to fund it themselves.

When the park were sued by a local couple over noise issues, this provided them with an opportunity to drag their heels on the issue, claiming they would have to wait for the outcome of the case before they could commit to spending money on the relief road.

Digger giants JCB have also been stumbling block, because they own some of the land which the road would need to occupy, and they have made it clear that they will not sell the land.

Tony Moult from the parish council said: "I know it will be a lot of money just to pacify Alton residents but something needs to be done."

Publicly Alton Towers remain committed to building the road, but after decades of negotiations, very little has actually happened. Local residents will be hoping that today's meeting might finally produce some results.

Yes there are land issues but the main issue is that Alton TOwers do not want to pay for it as the whole community will benefit from the road and they feel the council should foot some of the bill.

JCB wont let them have the land they require either.
