James, can I draw your attention to the following section of the rules of nominating....and this I quote word for word from p41 of September's Autosport)

'Nominees must hold a British passport and be aged between 18 and 23 years old on January 1,2003.They must have competed in a British or European single-seater championship up to and including the British Formula 3 Scholarship class in 2003.F3 Championship class entrants are excluded.'

To my knowledge, your man Johnston has had one race in an ageing F1 car,and well done to him for getting that far.But one race doesn't constitute a championship,so don't ask people to nominate a driver that isn't eligible for the title. And maybe a couple of your other suggestions may have eligibility issues as well, having only competed in closed wheel racing this year.If I am wrong, then I take it all back.If I am right, then we will all come to Brands in a couple of weeks where we will all laugh and point at you.....

Hi Stiggy,

I have also nominated Lee Caroline; an inside source told 3 months ago Phil Keen may be on the list. Please tell me why Sports car racers should not get recognition. Dan Eagling and Si Pullan; where they flukes?

Erm,have you actually READ the rules?Sports car drivers ARE NOT ELIGIBLE!It says so in black and white!!!Or does the fact that their sports cars are only fitted with one seat make their ride a single-seater?In that case,I nominate Mark Proctor from the ASCAR series. He's only got one seat in his car.I know he's a bit over 23,but hey,we're not going by the rules now,are we?!

Why have they excluded Sports Car Drivers? Is this award rigged this year? Even Lewis Hamilton has taken himself out of the running.

It's their competition, mate,so it's their rules I'm afraid! Not exactly rigging,is it?More a recognition that single-seater drivers are what they are looking for with a view to being an F1 driver, hence the prize of an F1 test.I know Mark Johnston got a crack at an F1 test, and as Bruce would say...."Didn't he do well?!"But lets be honest, there are a lot of very talented and more deserving drivers out there that are many, many places further up the board than him,and most of them are single-seater drivers.Where is our next F1 star more likely to come from, being realistic?Banger racing?Autocross?ASCAR?Or from the single-seaters of F3 or Formula Renault, for example?I know where I'd put my money, and it's not on Mr Johnston.

Susie Stoddart all the way,methinks!

Maybe the rules have changed. Simon Pullan and Dan Eagling did not come from single seaters but were nominated. Phil Keen was in single seaters prior to Tuscans. David Mason is 25 and therefore not eligble. Lewis Hamilton from Formula Renault is an obvious choice, but as he is backed by McLaren, maybe he is not eligble. (James, why do you think he is not eligble?)
My personal choice is TOM KIMBER-SMITH who leads the Formula Ford Championship, but I am biased - his Dad is a mate of mine and far too old himself for a nomination!!!!!!

Lewis has taken himself out of the running for his own reasons. The one being he is sponsored by McLaren.

In fact, isn't Coulthard the only winner of the event to be on the F1 grid? Gavin nearly got there (Pacific, good grief!) OR had Wilson won it before?

In that case the rules for 2003 have changed from last year, because Simon Pullan was nominated and got down to the final six. No need to get out yer pram Stiggy, James was quite right to ask the question about Eagling and Simon. It has obviously been changed, either at the behest of Mclaren or the BRDC to only encompass single seater drivers as I assume they are looking for the next British World Champion. The fact that Kelvin Burt, Oliver Gavin and Allan McNish, all former winners of the event (correct me if I'm wrong on McNish someone) have all gone on to bigger and better things in sportscars proves that the whole thing is a complete farce!

Mark Johnston is from the Irish Republic so probably holds an Irish passport and not a UK one.

Not getting out of my pram for anyone, mate! It just makes me laugh that James has obviously seen the page in Autosport that has the rules of eligibility printed, and has then completely ignored them and made a whole bunch of nominations, most of which don't come up to the requirements of the competition.Just because the rules were different last year, doesn't mean we can ignore or adapt this years rules to suit our own agenda! In my line of work,we have a phrase for people who ignore instructions:RTFM!Or Read The F*****g Manual,in it's full text!It is very foolish to submit a vote for someone without checking that they are eligible. It is even worse to publicly canvass for support for that person.Read and understand the rules,it's not a difficult thing to do and saves wasted nominations.I'm certainly not trying to take anything away from sportscar drivers,I prefer watching them to single-seaters and have every respect for their dedication and skill.Maybe they should have a seperate award for Young Sportscar Driver of the Year,so as to make it clear of the differences involved.

As for Mark holding a British passport,I'm sure he does as he is an Ulsterman and in that case not from Eire.If I'm wrong I shall eat my fruitbat.

I'll get back in the pram now,it only has one seat so maybe James and Co will nominate me!

Easy,people.....

I believe Mark Johnston comes from County Fermanagh - Northern Ireland so he should hold a British passport.
