Lotus Carlton,,whats the history??

Ok so lotus got taken over by GM back in the eighties,and those of us that are in the corvette world know of their involvement with the ZR1, but what was the brief history of the Carlton/Omega,how many did they build?,why did they come about?,was there something in the water around the late Eighties that spurred these ideas to fruition?

They should have put a chevy v8 in it because my Lotus Carlton was a load of trouble, mainly thanks to the engine. A little bit overrated, especially as the ZF box was quite awkward and they understeer like pigs, plus they rust and you can't get all the spare parts for them any more. Glad to bid mine a fond farewell after 7k bills in 18 months or less.
