Sometimes I wonder whether insurance companies ask all the boring questions only to make up an answer on the spot when it comes to a price!!!

I'm 24 with 5 years ncb and no penalty points and I've been think about Elise ownership.

S1 = £1158
Sport 135 = £1162
111S = £1134

Has the world gone mad or is it just me? All other details were the same it was only the vehicle type that changed.

Guessing it comes down to long term stats perhaps? More of us youngun's able to buy a standard S1 and then wrap it round a telephone pole than do the same in a 111S or 135R maybe.

Prices seem a bit high though, I pay 870 for my S1, mods declared, 5 years NCB and 3 points.

Maybe it's the curse of living in Liverpool for me.

If the Conservatives are to be listened to I should be packing my bags and moving to Oxford or Cambridge instead.

.......Yeah right

I've got my Sport 160 insured as a classic with Hagerty for £280 and I'm 24. So those quotes are way over the top. I insure both of my cars for much less than that.

That's interesting, I thought I'd done well getting from original quotes of £1900+ down to about £1000.

What kind of use are you insured for? I'm getting quotes for driving 25,000 miles a year, social domestic and pleasure, commuting to a single place of work and 3,000 business miles.

Cheers

I use the Elise as a weekend car, so have limited mileage at 3000 miles. I also live in a good post code which helps out. Only down side is I need to run another car to get classic insurance on the Elise.

If you have room I would recommend running the Elise as a second car. My work hack is a Mercedes 300ce costs me £500 on 10000 miles policy. Which I can leave any ware and not worry about. The Elise is just for fun and tinkering about with. Don't get me wrong the Elise makes a fine every day car. But the way I'm doing it, is costing nearly the same amount of money as just having a the Elise as an only car. The Elise feels even better after having to drive the old tank for the week.

Tommy, i am due for renewal on my Sport 160 and someone mentioned Hagerty to me last night. Coupe of questions:
Did you phone them direct, or brooker?
Cover you to drive other vehicles 3rd party?
Track Day cover?
Earn a no claims bonus?

Cheers

I already have a second car - Golf Mk1 GTI
and a third one - Classic Mini (in build stages at the moment)

The Mrs will chop my balls off if I were to tell her I was getting a fourth. I'm already under strict orders to get rid of one when I get the Elise. To be honest that's what I want it for. I spend two hours a day in the car and it's the most boring part of my life. It'll be less boring in an Elise even if it is a bit less comfy.

I'll have a look at those other insurance companies thanks everyone

I phoned Hagerty direct on 08700420940.
I think they will cover you for any other car they insure. So the other car has to be insured with Hagerty
Track day cover: No idea
I don't think you earn no claims on a classic policy as they don't take them into account. But they do ask if you've had an claims made against you in the last five years.

The best people to speak to are them. They're nice enough on the phone and answer all your questions. But I've not had to make any claims with them, so no idea what they are like then

TBH, £1100 is a good price for 25k miles SDP&C with Class 1 Business use. I pay not far off that, but that's with 3 years NCB (26).

You're being hammered because of the policy spec you're asking for. Hardly anyone does that mileage in an Elise, most only have SDP coverage and a limited mile policy. Why insure it for all that crap when it's your 4th car? Just whack it on a modern classic policy, SDP only, no commuting and 5k miles per year. Should be possible to get it well under a grand if you park off road, even better if you can garage it.

I'll be using it as a daily driver in place of the boring Passat that I use every day at the moment. I'm not worried about packing the miles on it but it will end up being the most used of three rather than just a weekend thing.

Well i just called Charlie at Hagerty and he was very helpful.

£336 fully comp, £100 excess for agreed value and 5,000 miles a year. Did not mentioned my age, just that i was over 25, did not mention other bits, just that it was garaged.

Was on a classi policy but i want to build up my no claims.

Not a bad quote though.

Doesn't sound too high to me. I'm currently 24, Elise S2, 2 years no claims, 5000miles year, brighton area for around £1100 with elephant. When I first bought my Elise I was 23 and the first quote I could get was for just under £10,000; nearly died! Most people were around £2500 but I settled on £1250 (again with Elephant).

That, and the price TVR Tommy is paying, sound very good indeed to me.

Duly noted for when my cover is up for renewal.
