Following on from DucatiGary's "hello, im..." thread, I had the addictive urge to replace my recently sold 55-200, man how I loved that lens grumpyhehe Anyhow, after taking a look around for a fix I ended up having a go of the three 70-200mm lenses that canon offer today. Preferring the hit quality from all things in the L range, I found the perfect fix - 70-200 f2.8 L USM IS cloud9

and relax hippy

Now thats just showing off! especially as you have the 100-400 i am after. Mind you its true what you say, i have just bought the Canon 50mm 1.4F. Looking forward to having a play when it arrives.

Edited to ask What can you get with the 70-200 you cant get with the 100-400 ? pretty new to this expensive hobby. Cheers Roy.

I've just taken charge of an old friend's - now deceased - camera, film and lighting equipment collection. It is remarkable and fascinating. He was a bit of a hoarder hehe I haven't got a clue what one camera is! I have about five large gadget bags full. I couldn't believe it when I went to see his wife. She kept going back into their walk-in wardrobe pulling out more and more bags eek It was like a tardis! I've got to go back again to collect the rest at some point.

Progression of lens desire with time / experience:

1./ Focal length is everything. This type of thing seems to be the lens equivalent of a remapped 335D:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/420-800mm-Telephoto-Lens-fr-...

2./ Quickly realise quality matters a bit too, as does a nice zoom so you don't have to change lenses and VR 'cos you can't handhold at 800mm very well. The Nikon 18-200 VR now appeals.

3./ Overtime realise that Slow consumer glass with VR doesn't stop action, and you can't do those "arty" shallow depth of field photos everyone else does. Suddenly everything slower than F2.8 isn't worth considering and quality is everything. If you can get this with VR, even better.

That's why pretty much every pro will have a 70-200mm F2.8 in their bag. Might not be the longest lens (though perfect for reportage style stuff), but high quality and nice and fast. THe 100-400 Canon may have more range but at the short end is two stops slower (it's F5.6 constant right?) and the 70-200 L is probably sharper?

Beyond this point things get silly. Shortcut hundreds of pounds and several years of shooting by buying a cheap 50mm F1.8 lens and try that over the slow std zoom.

Right, think I've upset enough people for one night. Night!

You get a great deal closer to distant objects. You also get shallower depth of field, flatter perspective and bigger biceps.

Nope I think it starts at f4.5, so not far off.

Doh! Actually, that little lot came out a bit harsh on the 100-400mm. Didn't mean it too, was just trying to defend the virtues of the 70-200mm (I didn't get it either a few years ago).

That's what I am hoping. I'm giving his super 8 cameras and a few other bits to a friend and hopefully I'll pass the remainder onto enthusiasts or the museum in Bradford.

I'll post one up later. I've worked out how to access the ground glass screen. No doubt I'll discover it is actually a detachable ground glass screen and nothing more silly
