Having been to the Growl, and seen the state of the chimaera having/had its outriggers replaced by Sport motive.

I am now super paranoid about chassis rust..

The main chassis looks ok on my car, the outriggers ok ish.

But they are starting to go, as far as I can see in the corners, ie flaking coat, bit rusty, all sounds reasonably solid, but it needs attention...

Can anybody recommend a business, that will actually 'cure' any problems that the car has.
And then do some additional prevenative measure...

So can anybody recommend someone to sort it out for me.
I Really am not in a position to do it myself.

Cheers

Did you get to speak to Sportmotive about their new replacement outriggers? I would imagine they can be welded in from below without removing the body.

It's not that far gone

Surface rust, tubes sound solid, the corner plates powder coat a bit flakey, etc

Just need treating...

ie a hundreds of pounds not 2-3000 pounds.

I overheard a conversation between a potential punter and Sportmotive at the GG and it sounded more iro £1500 which didn't sound too bad imo.

Those Chim outriggers at Growl were replaced Friday afternoon!
Conversation with the guy who did the work and makes them and the chassis was £1500 (ish) fitted.

At best most companies are only going to clean and waxoyl it for a few hundred quid.

For the time it would take you to drive somewhere and wait while that is done, I would give it a quick cleanup with a wire brush and scape the muck out the corners. Then use an aerosol kit like this http://www.rust.co.uk/popup.cfm?p_i=405025&p_n... to get some cavity wax in there and then top it over with the underbody wax which will protect it for the time being.

But Fernhurst/Austec can do clean and waxoyl.

There are loads of places down south that will remove any rust, repaint and wax oil the out riggers for you.

Cost is not very much .. few hundred quid and those same TVR specialists I'm sure will be able to advise if and when they think further remedial work will be needed.

Or you can clean it all up and paint if yourself for < 50 quid..

I was well impressed with Sportmotive's package...£995 for both complete powder coated outriggers, and they reckoned it took them 5hrs to do the car on display. They were talking figures of £400 ish to install. What impressed me about it, was it was welded with the body in place and no cutting holes in floors etc.
I've been quoted some very frightening body off prices in the past so this is a very tempting route when the time comes.

is that wrong?

Unfortunately the bit that actually rusts isn't accessible with the body on. All you can do is delay the inevitable if you wire brush and Waxoyl from below. They will always go above the fillets where the body bolts to the chassis, so sooner or later they'll either need replacing or the body raising to treat them properly.

What happens is silt builds up in the gap and acts as a sponge holding water against the chassis. You may be able to buy a little more time by jetwashing between the tube and the mounting plate and then waiting for it to dry before Waxoyling it but it all depends on the condition before you start.

found it

and you are right

995 for the pair... plus fitting
Did they say how they rust protect the welds to the chassis

Pity it's stoke on trent

and I'm in Reading.
Doesn't, I think (hope) warrant new ones yet

Anybody actually recommend a specific company down south..
to treat, etc

Just to point out again I do NOT have the time inclination to do it myself

Y'know, if the outriggers need doing, ain't it as well to get the body off to see if all else is OK?

What prompts me to say this is the horror that I saw recently on a 98 Chimaera. The guy thought it was just the outriggers, but when they took the body off there was nowt (hardly) holding the front of the car to the back. Honestly, t'was the scariest thing.

Very true and the chap from SM was very keen to point out that it would be a very good idea to check the whole chassis on a ramp to make sure its ok prior to going this route.
£1500 fitted is a whole heap cheaper than £4-5k I was quoted a few years back for a body of repair. Like the OP I have neither the time nor inclination to do it myself.

Thanks for all the interest and positive comments on our outriggers guys, just to clarify prices they are £995 per PAIR including VAT but plus fitting and are in stock now. We completely finished today the Chimaera we had on display at the growl and all in it took around 15 hours to cut off the old, weld in the new and repaint as necessary, we reckon that will come down the more we do but it also depends on how bad your originals are and how easy they come off, so as a guide, to finish the job completely including new bolts and repainting the chassis where we have welded in the new outriggers you should expect to pay between £1500 and £1800 all in job done. The outriggers are jig formed in one section (each side) allowing us to cut off the old ones at the points where they join the main chassis and weld in the new ones without disturbing the body. We will be updating our website soon with pictures and advice on fitting plus our comlpete new chassis' which are now available at £3995 inc VAT.
We believe our prices to be very competitive and obviously more cost effective than a "body off" resto which on average costs around £4k, plus our customer with the red Chimaera (which was on display at the growl) brought the car into us last Thursday and drove it away today with a new MOT less than a week later.

You are quite correct, we would always advise a full chassis inspection before tackling just the outriggers, we have a Chimaera in now which came in for a full repaint and a chassis "tidy up" and we found one of the main chassis box sections had corroded through next to the drivers footwell plus some really heavy corrosion in the rear diff cage area, ironically the outriggers are fine....well I say fine, they are not brilliant but not rusted through anywhere. The car is a 1997 with 98k miles.

Sounds like pretty good prices to me! Just in case anyone is interested, if your outriggers don't need replacing but need a bit of TLC, take your car to these guys:

http://chassisclean.co.uk/

About £350 IIRC for a full and thorough clean, rust treatment and re-sealing with rust inhibitor, wax and underseal which they do over 2 days. Got mine done a few months ago and it still looks like new underneath even after winter and lots of wet weather. Check out the 'process' page to see what they do - really nice guys and give you a certificate to stick in your history folder to say what's been done.

Hi all.
Does anyone know of a similar company who will do the great job that Sportmotive have done but based near London. I am considering going to Tower View, has anyone any experience of chassis work done here. I am gutted as I have only had my 4.5 a week or so and just found some really bad corrosion on the o/s outriggers. I dont have the funds to have the full body off.
