British Formula 1 driver Ralph Firman has failed his medical due to an inner ear imbalance and will not compete in the Italian Grand Prix for Jordan-Ford. The team has yet to reveal who will replace him alongside Giancarlo Fisichella this weekend.

Firman was injured in a high-speed crash in practice for the Hungarian Grand Prix last month, but was expected to recover in time for the Italian race. He had a meeting with FIA medical delegate Professor Sid Watkins in Monza when the problem was discovered.

Zsolt Baumgartner is in Monza to run the Friday morning free practice and is favourite to driver over the weekend but if he can get some financing Formula 3000 champion Bjorn Wirdheim (who has tested for Jordan) could be driving.

Ralf Schumacher who also underwent a medical after his big accident during the testing sessions last week has been cleared and will race.

Still no news yet on the replacement...though the hot favorite is Zsolt Baumgartner.

I'm surprised it's taken so long for Firman to recover properly.

He said when he stood up from sitting in a chair he felt dizzy and Sid Watkins said that was enough to not drive. They are very careful when it comes to balance problems as it can seriously effect a drivers perception at 200mph especially at Monza where speeds are even higher. It would also have been unsafe for other drivers if one of them can't tell if he's steering straight or not.

Jordan need money so I think whoever Ralph's replacement is for the weekend they will need to bring some petrol money with them.

..... now where's my piggy bank

It would be nice to see Bjorn Wirdheim in the car. He seemed to go pretty well in a test, not far off Fisichella

Would be nice to see Wirdheim given the drive....but I don't think he pulls in the cash...

Poor bloke. It must be killing him! Inner ear problems like that take years to repair, if they ever do!

As for the driver, where is Jordan's stand-in official test driver? I was surprised the jumped past him on the Austrian Grand Prix but again? He must be pretty miffed (if he exists).

I bet it will be a local to Italy, they'll do the same trick as Austria...

[pedanticmode] It was Hungary, not Austria, Zsolt is Hungarian.

Zsolt is the/an official Jordan test driver, I am not sure of any others, but he signed with Jordan a few weeks ago, IMHO he should get the drive, he did fine in Hungary.

Ralph Firman was up at the circuit, to give some support to the Jordan team.

He was asked when he`d be back in the car...... "I should be ready for Silverstone" There are a couple of test days there next week apparently.

My prediction - this week's Italian GP will be the fastest GP ever.

The 1971 Italian GP still holds the record for the fastest race.

I love to quote myself

Firman was indeed testing at Silverstone to-day
