Thinking of upgrading from my D50 soon, which is having quite a few problems to say the least. And has really put me of doing any photography. Been looking at Used D200's and D2x's on ebay and there looking quite interesting.

The D200 seems to be my favorite so far since it seems to have alot of the D2x's features and is smaller + cheaper. however is there any features that would be worth spending the extra money for the D2x.

i would go for the D300 or D700 but my budget/skill does not stretch anywhere near that far tongue out

I'd say that the D2x is more ruggedly built has a faster motordrive and the battery lasts a bit longer between recharges but that the D200 is more advanced as it's 18 months younger so it handles noise better than the D2x.

Overall I'd say it depends on how hard you treat your kit. If it gets a really hard life I'd say D2x, if you look after it I'd go D200.

Cheers

D2X has audio recording for notes. Battery life longer. Portrait format shutter release button. Tough build quality. 11 area AF. And it feels fantastic in the hands. Marry it up to a couple of serious lenses and it's a LOT of fun.

I got mine on eBay at a knock-down price and am absolutely loving it. I also got the 80-400 VR Zoom. 400mm and a DX sensor gives a LOT of magnification. I've used that a LOT - I like photographing wildlife and it's ever so useful for that...

Is a new D300 a lot more expensive than a decent s/h D2X? Might be worth considering the extra for latest D300.

D300 is a good bit more. £150 or £200 or so. Doesn't have the same build/toughness. Better technology of course...my brother has one and has been getting stunning images.

what's a decent price, I have a hobbyist used pretty good condition one for sale. I'd give it 9/10 boxed, and we can talk about the dk17 eyepiece and wt-2 wifi transmitter.

The thing about a d2 over a d200/300 is people give you room & move out the way as they think you are a pro, it really is a marked difference and does help IMO, but the d2 is heavy. I'm fighting in my mind whether to wait for a d3x or just get a d700 - tough choice :-(

Anyway lmk if you are maybe interested :-)

Thanks Don. I just had a quick look at ebay, and I think that for a good condition one its a fair price.

Mole, if you want a D2X I will sell you mine for £830 inc insured postage. Or you could collect from Cambridge/Huntingdon for £800. I will guarantee it not DoA, in fact, if you had any problems in the first 30 days I'd do what I could to help out (provided you didn't drop cam etc..). This is probably on 10K shutter actuations (rated 150K) as it's not been used by a pro - do take this into account when buying pro bodies smile - I also have a wt-2 and other stuff, but I'm assuming these wouldn't be of interest?

Where the D2x is better than the D300 is in speed&consistency of focus. Don't forget that the pro bodies are much quicker to focus, and have easier modes to access to change the focus style (tracking etc..) - the d2x is ahead of my d300 in this respect for sure, although I prefer the d300 sensor.

Alternatively I am also wanting to sell my D300, I think this would be at £900 inc posting.

I'm not a nigerian scam artist, I run www.360precision.com - and we need to buy cameras to measure them and shoot with, hence my owning 1/2 the nikon range, but I'm trying to free some cash up atm to save for a d700/d3x.

I may also be persuaded to sell the 18-200vr lens I have, but I fear this will be pushing you well past your anticipated buying price. I do also have a nikon 18-70dx lens with a broken AF- I'll tell you what, if you bought either I'd chuck that in for you. I lent the lens to my mum, now it's bust (thanks mum), but you'd still have a decent manual focus zoom lens - it's not a bad little jobbby smile
