Oh dear.

1. Those magical footprints we saw 'walking' across Beijing? Faked. Filmed previously and added in to the production.

2. That cute little girl 'singing'? Not her. Real little girl deemed too ugly for TV audiences.

does it surprise you?

it's a massive PR event for China to market itself on the workd stage - I'll bet my mortgage that everything has been carefully scripted, reviewed and approved before it goes ahead

i thought those little firework skits were pre filmed anyway because it would have been extremley hard to film something liek that live, so no surprise on that one for me

Can you imagine if this were to happen at the 2012 olympics? Telling a person they can't sing because they're ugly? There would be outrage!

I think however, this should have started a long time ago in this country, at least then we wouldn't have had to endure Michelle McMannus on X factor or which ever pop show she won!

They look the same to me!

[Disclaimer: That was a joke, playing on the stereotype cliché that says all oriental people look the same when they clearly do not. Your mileage may vary. May contain nuts.]

I suspect Joe Murray will agree with you on that one.

His boxing bout this morning against a Chinese chap was a travesty of scoring, or not, in Murrays case.

Murray lands a clean one = no score
Chinese boxer wildly swings in vague direction of Murray = 2 points!

Brilliant viewing.

Well, technically, no, they would have been a piece of the proverbial to do. A very easy shape to replicate on the ground and very simple pyrotechnics. The problem was launching them in the right places. On viewing it for the second time there was no smoke from the firing sites and some of them were int he middle of road junctions with buses going over them!

Shame really.

I honestly thought it was an animation too as it looked... er... like an animation rather than live footage.

The shock for me was that they thought anyone thought that was real?!

And agreed about the boxing being scripted earlier today - disgusting really but kinda expected.

Yes, its a PR stunt...China are trying to tell the world that they are a Superpower, on the same level as the UK and USA.

So who do they think they are going to impress if they are doing stuff like that...Its still a comnist country and there is no other way of looking at it...

Next we'll be told that gymnast didn't really defy gravity to run round the lip of the stadium to light the torch.

They are a pretty big superpower. Certainly way ahead of the UK.

The UK is a superpower?

I don't see anything wrong with the computer generated fireworks display or the mime act.
What if the fireworks were live, and they couldn't be seen because of the smog? People would just bash it no matter what. Actors/singers etc often use body doubles, do we have a go at them for that? IMO the opening ceremony was still bloody impressive, whatever way you look at it!
