GTV V6 Speedo problem

Hi,
We have just bought a 2000 GTV V6. Beautiful engine and a lovely drive. Now have my first experience of the Alfa's quirks.
As I was driving the car back up North the speedo started playing up.
If you are driving at 40 mph for example, the needle will go to 40 mph initially but then will start to drift between anywhere between 20 and 40, go back up to 40 where it will remain stable for a period before it suddenly starts to move between 20 an 40 again. This seems to happen at all speeds.
Has anyone seen this before and know what it might be?
