Ticking noise

I,ve noticed a ticking noise from my car on tick over. Having read through the threads on this I'm inclined to think I'm being a little paranoid. I,ve checked all the exhaust hangers and they seem to be intact. The noise does seem to dissapear as soon as the throttle is touched I just wondered what else I could check and if it is a possible maifold problem. As I say it is hardly audible from the cockpit but if I lift the engine cover It can be heard.Any ideas.

Alternator belt?

Has it recently been outside in the rain or washed at all? if so, then yes it maybe the belt.

I have washed the car but not for a day or two. Is the adjustment of the belt easy enough?.

Yeah its pretty easy to adjust. What you could also do is try and feel around all the cogs to see if there is any debis lodged inside that may have broken off from the belt.

Do you have the Noble build manual? if not get your hands on a copy.

Yeah its pretty easy to adjust. What you could also do is try and feel around all the cogs to see if there is any debis lodged inside that may have broken off from the belt.

its probably the exhaust manifold leaking

get somebody to put thier foot over the end of the exhaust(s) and see if it gets worse

But wouldnt this get worse under acceleration?

Not necessarily. I had exactly the same problem on a MKIII Supra. Weird I know but that infuriating ticking is probably down to the manfold seal.

I have a tapetty-type noise which has been coming from the top of my engine for some time. It's why I took the car to JNM originally as I was a little worried about it. They listened to it and within 5 minutes said it's quite a common sound - can't remember the exact details but he mentioned that on a lot of the cars the cam tensioner (? - I'm kind of paraphrasing a conversation I had 3 months ago so forgive me if this makes no sense) is sometimes set a little tight when constructed. He didn't seem worried at all by it.

I mentioned the possibility that it was tappets making the noise and he said that tappet/hydraulic issues were very very rare on these engines.

Don't know if this is the same sound that you're getting though.

Sounds like manifold to me to. does the ticking get worse as the engine gets hot?

I have a similar noise on my '05 M400 that increases with revs until the engine noise drowns it out. It gets louder inside the car until the oil temp is over 100 degrees then above this it pretty much disappears.

I also got JNM to have a listen and they said not to worry - mentioning belts / cams etc.

Having searched this forum there are a few suggested explanations (including exhaust manifold), however, it was only after a random Google search on "Ford Duratec ticking noise" that I actually managed to establish that this seems to be a fairly common problem with these engines. Having said that, the various articles I have found suggest it is actually more of an annoyance than a problem, and there is a simple inexpensive fix for it. Ford have actually issude Technical Service Bulletins for the fix which relates to the alignment of the intake camshaft on the front bank of cylinders. This link probably gives the best explanation:

I may be barking up the completely wrong tree but as far as I have been able to establish this hasn't been mentioned on this forum before.

Yes, I think you've explained this a lot better than my effort .

I had a ticking sound coming from the top of my engine just before last Christmas. The garage diagnosed the sound as a tappet(s) so i went ahead and replaced 12 of them to be sure. It solved the anoying ticking but ive heard it is not that big of a deal if you do have this problem. Tappets are around £15 each.

Noise is there from cold doesn't seem to get any worse or any better as car warms.
