The last 24 hours have not been the best of my life....I went to the doctor yesterday because I've been going to the toilet more frequently than I would normally and I'm having to get up early in the morning to drain my bladder.

I walked in to the waiting room thinking about what I was going to have for dinner that night and walked out white as a sheet. The doctor asked what my problem was and then asked about any prostate problems in the family. My grandfather died from cancer that had developed from his prostate and my father was diagnosed with prostate cancer at 57 and has since had it removed totally and is clear from cancer but with a radical change in his lifestyle. Forgot to say that I'm 29 fit and healthy.

The doctor then got me to give a sample of urine and suggested that it would be a good precaution to do some tests. He decided that he would examine my prostate, the norm for this is to lube 2 fingers then insert them in to the rectum and feel the gland. I can confirm now that I never want anything putting up there ever again and I feel sorry for the girls who I have got my brown wings with!

After a very unpleasant 20 seconds the doctor informed me that I have a prostate that is larger than is normal for a 29 year old and I need to go back next week for some blood tests. I'm feeling pretty low today and googling prostate is not helping. I wish the doctor had taken the blood test first then it would have cut the wait for my results by a week but because he stimulated the prostate yesterday it takes a week to settle again.

Not looking forward to the next couple of weeks. Have any PH'ers got any experience of prostate problems, good or bad?

Cheers

Don't panic.

You're young and it can be managed even if it is malignant.

Don't PANIC.

Google for Prostate Support and you'll get some good charities to talk to.

The size may not be a bad thing. Prostatic enlargement tends to begin around the fifties but can occur earlier in some men. It usually indicates benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and your smyptoms are consistant with this.

However the symptoms for Prostate Cancer (PCa) are similar, though typcially the doctor will feel a lumpy or craggy rather than an smooth enlarged prostate.

I'm by no means trying to offer a diagnosis; the blood tests and possible subsequent investigations will do that, but in general those symptoms coupled with a smooth enlarged prostate would tend more towards BPH.

your age is unusual in either case

Good luck

TWO FINGERS!
yes His words were..."Right if you could just relax as it will make it much easier and less painful"

I'm now lying down on my side, butt naked desperately trying to think of ways to relax my ever tightening sphincter.

"You'll feel some slight pressure and a moments discomfort as I feel the prostate...."

I then clenched so hard that I had to put my hand out to stop me head butting the wall! eek

As with all these things catching them early is the key. Hope the results go well.

Good luck, hope all goes well.

I've noticed over the last year or two that my urinary flow is much reduced and I have to get up early to go and have to wait a while for anything to happen.

I just put it down to age and a bit of denial too if I'm honest.

I'm 39 and haven't mentioned it to anyone until now.

Is it normal?

I've come to accept that I'm probably going to have some prostate issues with my family history so decided that if I ever noticed anything different then I would go and get it checked out. I'm gutted that something is not right I'm relatively young, planning to have kids in the next couple of years.

I'd def and go have it checked out, my dad was lucky in that he knew what to look out for so the cancer was confined to his prostate. If it gets time to grow and spread then you can guess the rest. Many men have small specks of cancer on their prostate by the time they die but most of the time something else will kill you first.

Seriously?

I thought it was age related, although I have noticed blokes older than me enter the gents, piss like a pressure washer, wash & dry their hands and leave before my dribble has even got going!

You're scaring me!

I have been ignoring it for about 2 years if I'm honest, possibly a bit longer.

I do appreciate your concern & I'll get checked out soon.

I'm taking my 70+ yr old Mum to a Hosp appt later, shame I can't get checked on the spur of the moment whilst I've not had time to think about it too much...

Who would you rather have stick their fingers up your butt? Young female doctor or old hairy man? I know which I'd pick - and it's not the hairy man.

Mate please.

If you're prepared to forego the chance to deal with something whcih if left for a long period could end your life half way through because you're worried about embarrassing a doctor, then you need a bl00dy good kickup the ar5e.

It's probably nothing. If it's something then they can stop it in its tracks and treat it well enough that something else will kill you in old age before it does.

Once it's in your bones, you're HISTORY mate. My Dad was 77 when I watched him die like an animal three months after it spread. He'd still be alive now if he'd had tests.

I dont' want to scare you, mate, but promise me you'll

shout GO TO THE FVCK1NG DOCTOR. NOW.

When it's been given the all clear, go out and get pis5ed and kick yourself up the ar5e for leaving it so long.

OK?
