Convertign films for IPOD

Am i right in thinking ipods play MP4?

If so, what should i use to convert my DVDs or AVIs to MP4?

Thanks Bahn, how about joining two files to run as one film? I currently have a film in two parts, both converted for ipod but i would prefer one file
