Whats Newquay like in the summer? Me and a few mates were thinking of going for a few days over August bank holiday, just to chill, have a few beers and bbq's/ We'd be camping somewhere, i think my mate mentioned smugglers cove?

We're all around 25, young professionals and not chavs so we dont want to go to a complete sausage/fight fest!

Imagine a massive massive massive Wetherspoons, with no roof and a beach.

And you're very close.

I'd pick somewhere else to go then.

Unless you have tribal tattoos and a gelled fringe.

There are chavs, but it depends where you go generally. They can be avoided with a bit of effort.....

I once had a very chilled out (free) holiday in Ibiza, so anything is possible.

However "possible" and "probable" are not the same thing.

My 19 year old nephew is there now with his 4 mates (after a year at different universities) and 5 tents. I'd text him and ask him what it's like, but it's after 12 noon and he'll be pissed or asleep.

Smuggler's Cove is just south of Newquay I believe, near Holywell Bay.

It's not near the centre of Newquay at all.

Newquay Central is everything you are looking to avoid. There are shedloads of lovely quiet places around and about down there....If a town is essential, maybe St Austell?

It gets absolutely rammed over bank holiday weekend down there.

Unless your specifically going there for the clubs/pubs I would go somewhere else.

Plenty of places in Cornwall that are perfect for a relaxing weekend surfing, bbq, beaching etc...

Ah such a shame to hear this frown

We went to Newquay for about 4 years running up until about 2000 I think it was (went for the eclipse on Fistral beach - that was great!).

We loved it then, though we were 17-20yrs old.

I guess it was only a matter of time!

We've just booked to go to Watergate bay next month, anyone got any experience?

It looked good to me as the beach is so close to the accomodation and the little 'un loves the beach.

The only place I had been in Cornwall prior to Newquay was St Ives.

So I had this notion that all of Cornwall was super-twee.

What a shock I got, going to Newquay, in January.

Smugglers Cove is nowhere near the centre of Newquay as others have said and it's very much a club 18-30 (or should that be 14-18) style campsite. Nothing is particualy decent there because it all gets trashed.

Newquay didn't strike me as a chav ridden place when i visited a week ago. I only spent a day there mind, as i was camping in Gwythian near St. Ives. I'd recommend Gwythian Farm camp site, its 15 minute walk from a really nice huge beach and quiet, has a good local pub. Plus Newquay is only 20 minutes from Gwythian. Theres so many camp sites obviously but i thought ours was good, clean showers, nice pitches, and has a local shop.

Driving is a must though because apart from the beach theres not much round there. It is more of a family based site, which is good in a way because your more likely to get a good nights sleep. I really enjoyed Cornwall, was my first proper visit. I did a lot of "couple" stuff as i was with my girlfriend, so we went to lands end, penzance, eden project, tintagel castle, looe harbour, and lizard peninsula. smile

Full of surfer dudes at certain times of the year, too - it's the surf capital of the UK, apparently.

I've been to a few really nice places in Cornawll with parents many years ago - Truro I think it was, very nice place, so Newquay is the exception rather than the rule.

Cracking times in Newquay though, really excellent times.

I went to Cornwall in July.
Padstow is nice (forget all the st about Rick Stein Spoiling it, it would be nothing without him)
St Ives was Ok, dont go to the tate... the hepworth garden however was worthwhile.
Various other bits were good.

Newquay is a hole filled with fat people and chavs.
(Althogh I did see a shortened VW bus and a chopped Pop that looked rather good.)

Dunno what your financial situation is, but surely a week in Spain wont take any logner to arrange or cost a great deal more.
