Petrus @ The Berkeley
Discussion
Well, we splashed out big-style for Mrs Havoc's birthday - was a surprise for her, even more so when her best friend & hubby turned up!
And what can I say? First-rate service, absolutely superb food, had a fantastic night. The bill at the end was a little steep, but it was never going to be Harvester prices...
Memorable points:-
- my wife being speechless for the first time since I've met her (!!!
) - Serge greeting her helped there. In fact, his slightly tongue-in-cheek approach (to the diners) the whole night seemed to help the whole room relax, as otherwise it felt slightly stuffy and formal.
- being given pate-de-foie-gras canapes a minute after we've sat down! Completely unexpected and set the tone beautifully.
- being handed a wine-album (30-pages and leather bound), and mistakenly opening it to the 'Petrus' page first...seeing a bottle listed at £10,995 made me go a little pale until I found the New World section further back...
- The best pan-fried foie gras and the most perfectly cooked scallop I've ever had.
- Tasting caviar for the first time (a creamy caviar-and-??? sauce accompanied the halibut).
- At one point having 4 waiting staff around the table doing different things.
- Discovering that crushed popcorn actually goes really well with a lemon creme!
In short, can really recommend it.

We paid £520 for 4 of us, inc. 2 cheaper bottles of wine (Kim Crawford Pinot Noir - had it before, very good), water, and coffees. Not something we'll be repeating particularly often, but as a once-in-a-blue-moon it was fantastic...
The Wareing/Ramsay spat...couldn't care less, as long as the food and service remains up-to-scratch (MW wasn't working on Sat night it appears - Alan someone was running the kitchen (and the food was still excellent), as we were told when our wives came back from a tour of the kitchen!!! Not that I'm jealous at all, no...)
