sounds like it could be quite serious....

check cam belts first, pull the plugs out and borrow an endascope...

Loud tapping/knocking... Valves meeting pistons? As Mr Scuffers suggests, get someone to check the belts to see if it's dropped some cogs and you've had a valves/pistons interface. Otherwise could be that the VVC mech has gone.

Ben,

I had something very similar happen to me in my 111s a couple of years ago. Sounded like loud tappets to start with but got worse and worse, very similar sound to having dropped a valve.

Got the AA to take it to my local dealer (still within warranty thankfully) and it turned out to be the bolt that holds the VVC cam mechanism housing together had sheared. Made a awful racket but didn't actually do too much damage.

Not sure of an easy / quick diagnosis other than taking the cam cover and/or carrier off i'm afraid.

Good luck

Dave

Hope you have better luck than I did: My break down was sorted for less than £20. Sorry I can't offer any advice.
