40d with grip or 1d3?

AF, viewfinder and high iso noise on the 40d would be a big step up from the 350d, how much better is the 1d3?

The 1.3 crop factor seems an attractive compromise between current 1.6 which I find a bit limiting at times and full frame which wouldn't be so good for motorsport.

New baby due in 5 weeks so seems as good an excuse as any for getting something new and shiny.

Lenses are

50mm 1.8 mkII (probably replace with 1.4)
28-135IS (could replace with 24-105L with 40d, would have to stay for a little while with 1d)
17-40L
100-400L

What should I buy, if I got the 40d would I end up looking at the 1d3 and wanting it still...

If you find the crop factor of your current camera to be a problem, wouldn't a wider lens be more cost effective than a camera with a larger sensor?

the current camera is going either way, rubbish high iso noise, not ganular enough steps between iso, body too small, dim viewfinder.

get narrower dof for a given focal length too with a larger sensor so it isn't just the 'zooming' aspect of it.

I could live with the 1.6 crop but if the 1d3 is that much better in other areas I may just bite the bullet on it?

I've got a 40D and would only upgrade for a full frame, if that helps. wink

If you've got the money just buy the 1DMK3 and get it over with. Dump the 28-135 for a 24-105L and your sorted for most situations at a track.

I was thinking of posting something along these lines.. So if I can chuck in..

Im up grading soon.. Ive ruled the 40 out as I want the build of a 1 series and higher fps.. so was looking between the IIn or III..

The cheapest Ive found the III for in the UK is £1900.. but is the III really worth the extra £700+ over a s/h mint IIn?

Fwiw.. the last couple of events Ive been to Ive spoken to two people who have gone up from 350's.. one to a IIn the other to a III. Both were more than happy with their cameras... so I guess the choice comes down to if you can justify the extra of the III.. then buy it.

But just to throw a spanner in the works.. If Canon release an updated, or a 'dumbed down' (less features) version in Sept as SOME RUMOURS suggest.. will there be a price drop and you kick yourself for buying now..

Questions questions.. biggrin

The only fault i can pick with my 1d is its size and weight. If you can live with not being able to remove a battery grip then i can see no reason not to get a 1d.

1D3 - speed. Not just FPS but everything. It just feels faster all round. It's not that the 40D is slow, it's....well you have to try it to really know. Dual CF and SD slot's are handy.

Battery life is unreal which is very handy. Charges can be weeks apart. 2500-3000 shots isn't uncommon.

You'll get a 1D series at some point. Might as well be now smile

Oh and £1900 in the uk? Must be some Hong Kong eBay thing surely?

Hhmmm if it's an American/ far east import it has no Canon warranty in the UK regardless of what he says. I 'like' the way he's just cut and pasted the text straight of DPReview's site. He didn't even remove :-

'Phil: As has become Canon's approach we had no information on this camera before embargo, this lack of trust they show with their most important (and reliable) publications only continues to damage their image within the industry.'

This is probably the one thing that would tempt me to upgrade my MK1. Getting a bit fed up with carrying 3 batteries around to cover one day's shooting.

I was under the impression that if you had a UK invoice, the warranty was valid?
Thanks...

As for the rest.. I know what your saying.. But Southampton isnt too far from me and (I havent asked yet) if he wont take cash on collection its a no brainer...

L lenses come with an International warranty but camera bodies don't.

He's undercutting the Hong Kong people by £200 and proper UK places by over £500. I wouldn't touch.

I tend to use the 1D MK2 for sports type stuff. I have used the 1DS MK3 for it and apart from a slower frame rate I'd say it's on par with the MK2 focus wise.
