noisy alternater

My alternater has always been rather noisy, like a washing machine at half spin, can i make it quiet? if so how?
apart from that is fine......only done 16,000 miles.
any suggestions welcome, ta mark, oh and the car is an "S" 1991 cat version

This may help, but when I was at David Greald I saw a mechanic chap spary some sort of lube on the belt of an S3 and it was so much quieter, not sure what it was but it did the trick. Some sort of oil maybe. Obviously not 3 gallons of it as the belt would slip.
this may work.
