misbehaving engine

Can somebody please help, just put the engine back in and got it though MoT, when it cold it runs ok (ok is a loose term here) but as soon as it starts getting hot it cuts out, won't idle, makes strange whiring noises, makes strange rattling noises and won't pick up well. it seems fine at high revs apart from the noises.

I am afraid to say i am about to blow my own fuse with this car, so if i can't sort it soon you may be able to pick up a cheap s in the classifieds.

Is it pinking and is there an air leak? Does it judder when you try to load up the throttle?

i can't here any pinking, as for an air leak i hope not because i have replaced the inlet gasket, plenum gasket (both with wellseal also) and the injector seals.

I'm in long eaton so if you want to take me for a spin round the block in it I'll try to make a diagnosis for you. Oh, when it's dark see if the plug leads are arcing under the bonnet. I've seen that a few times.

This is interesting, where is your shop? just looked at your website and noticed the lm500 notes, thats the one i have seen then, my dad has a mantula and will be looking to upgrade to a 4.6 before to long.

Thanks for the offer, it would mean you coming to me so i can spin you round the streets where i keep it because although it has a new MoT, i have decided not to put it fully on the road until i am happy i can sort it etc.

Thanks everyone, especially Boosted LS1 who gave me an hour of his time this afternoon, and jed-s for the details on the fault finder he uses.

The problem turned out to be 2 simple issues. Ignition timing, i didn't realise you need to put the ECU into a fixed map to do this. Running rich, it had fouled the plugs up so it was missing and cutting out when hot, this was being caused by one of the air flow meters, the connections were corroded so that the ECU was reading a high voltage (large airflow) thus banging loads of fuel in.

I can not recommend enough to everybody, go to halfords etc for a gunsons fault finder, it cost me £9.99 but told me exactly what i needed to know.

The noises are the release bearing, which i can live with for now until i am sure everything else is o.k.

Its getting there, shame i will have to take the engine back out at some point to replace the release bearing, but at least there is some progress, am now contemplating taxing/ insuring it on the 1st so i can give it a run and see what its really like.
