Hi TVR guys, you might have seen my post here http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a....

Just wondering, is the AJP8 really as light as 250lbs? Is that weight a dressed engine?

Much thanks.

"People" say that they're about 110kgs (presumably dry). I've never weighed one, but I do have one sitting on my garage floor. Given that I can move it about by hand fairly easily, I would think that subjectively, 110kgs cant be far off.

If anyone wants to lend me a load gauge, I could lift the engine with it and find out once and for all?

Can't you just put it on an set of bathroom scales ..

110 kg is about 220lbs and bathroom scales go to 20 stone (280 lbs).. and have a kg scale..

I was thinking that myself, and in fact if you've got some "ahem" American scales, they can go as high as 30st, which (hopefully) should be loads.

Yes, would greatly appreciate it if you could weigh it.

Ok been out to the garage with the bathroom scales. They read up to 130kgs, so the engine is well within weight.

So, my (blown head gasket) late 4.2 AJP, with ONLY water pump and oil pump attached weighed in at.........103kg!

Now the PS pump is pretty tiny on these things, as is the flywheel. Add everything else in and I think that the 115kg figure is'nt too TVR-esk.€

Wet then you've got 6l of oil and 8l of coolant.

Much thanks!

Is the AJP8 pretty much the lightest V8 that has gone in a road-going car?

Nope, hayabusa v8 I think, though people are free to contradict me:

78kg I think I read somewhere.

Obviously no car manufacturer has used one in a road car, but they have been instanned in road legal; track cars by specalists.

I'll give you that but its 200lbs which is nearer 91kgs. I think the AJP8 was designed to fit in a 22" (or 24"??) cube which isn't too shabby considering its a 4.5L compared to the Haya at 2.8L. Not forgetting the AJP8 is over 14 years old, not bad for its day me thinks.

So, how much does the Chevy V8 ie: LS2, LS7, weigh? Just wondering as a few people seem to be going for the swap and I suppose it might upset the weight distribution.

Also, what about the Speed Six, does anyone know what they weigh?

LS is around 180Kgs compared to the AJP8 at around 120Kgs. I think the speed 6 AJP6 is around the same weight as the AJP8

Not sure I'm sure someone will post its definitive weight soon but I understood it to be a little more than the AJP8 at around 140Kgs.

Blimey, the AJP8 just keeps getting better. It really was a fantastic achievement for a few blokes in a battered factory.

Holy st. So why exactly did the S6 become the mainstay of TVR and not the AJP8, I presume build costs were higher?

I believe Al Melling said that the AJP got shelved due to emmissions regs. Due to the 4 valve head on the s6, it got kept on as the mainstay.

Now, a 4 valve head for the AJP...spin

Melling has done it(4 valve V8),but it is too wide for the TVR engine bay's apparantly.Shame, thatfrown
Emissions was the reason the AJP couldn't go on,such a shame considering how much better than the S6 it wasfrown
