I have a 400D and for most of the time leave on my Tamron 18-200 (non IS) which I've been happy with but am now thinking I don't use the full zoom extent that often so would be better off with a higher quality but shorter zoom. And maybe zoom with my feet more instead.

From reading the millions of threads on here recommending all sorts of lenses, I fancy the Sigma 17-70 f/2.8-4.5 which seems good value at a little over £200.

Is there an IS equivalent from any manufacturer? Or perhaps there's no real benefit from it when you're only at 70mm? I like the sound of the Canon 28-135 f/3.5-5.6 IS lens but think I'd miss the 18-28mm range.

f2.8 from the Sigma sounds nice, but perhaps I'd not see a great improvement otherwise over my Tamron zoom (which starts at f3.5 anyway)?? In which case I'd fancy a 10-20mm lens instead I think, rather than using my Tamron lens at 18mm so often. I already have the bargain 50mm f1.8 which I think is great.

So many choices (and questions)! (Birthday coming up!) smile

Thanks,

Ruari

The Sigma lens sounds quite versatile, at what aperture does it become sharp?

The 17-70 is only f2.8 for a very short time, it quickly becomes an f3.5 lens.

It is OK sharpness though, checkout photozone.de review - make sure you go for the 'II" revision as its better at focusing, the 1st revision could be iffy.

IMO I'd go for one of the 17-50f2.8 zooms, constant f2.8 is worth a lot mroe to me than an extra 20mm.

Totally agree...
