hi there, i've been toying with the idea of replacing the airbox with something a bit more free flowing as my OEM box is about to be replaced at service.

I've seen vast disparity in pricing of various products though - for example the K&N 57i induction kit is about £65 whereas the ITG kit is £170ish... now, they both offer a cold air feed takeoff from the intake on the nearside, so what's the difference?

confused... smile

edit: I already have a cat replacement janspeed S/S full system smile

I have a K&N and really like it. Alot of people here will tell you different and I have no doubts that the ITG is the better kit but it has made my running temp lower despite it being close to the engine bay and the noise is rather nice!

I may be going the other way around. Actually now have a K&N, will se how the standard airbox compares with that soon, as not so keen on the sucky noise smile

The K&N will pulling hot air from round the bay as well. You want to get something enclosed, ITG, hurricane, piper etc

The OEM filter will be made from paper or sponge and will be fitted to a range of cars, whereas the K&N filter will be designed to be able to suck in more air more efficiently.

oh right!

so the difference in price is the difference in optimisation between the two aftermarket airboxes mentioned..

I still find it hard to believe the ITG can be so much better, is it purely the carbon fibre casing round it that makes it so?

still a bit confused really..

and £100 odd is 25+ pints of lager round my way.. scratchchin

The ITG is closed induction so its one piece forcing cool air into the engine, the K&N is open so relies on air coming to it through the side pod.

Cooler air = better!!!

so long as its a closed airbox, a big fat pipe going to the side, and either a foam or cotton filter - about the same

you only get a few bhp anyway (dont believe the hype) its mostly for noise

I think at a good price/performance one is the Hurricane from Eliseshop

I have the carbon ITG looks and sounds fantastic, it will look nice in our S1 as you see more of it.

I've had a Hurricane, an ITG and now have an open Pipercross on a long hose, secured right down by the air intake. If you do go for a K&N, get a longer hose and duct it as far down to the air intake as you can.

The Hurricane is nice, but it's a lot of money and just makes noise, not power. I reckon a bigger diameter hose leading to an airbox with an ITG in there will do the job nicely. It will aid breathing and might add a bhp or two, no more. My unused itg is sitting in the garage since I fitted the hurricane, and the big hose I had is currently in the Omega.....

I've got the ITG Maxogen. Had the car rolling road tested at TDI a few weeks back and he could see that the atmospheric pressure drop even at highest revs meant that the ITG was flowing really well. In fact, he said that to improve on it you'd have to be looking at throttle bodies with individual socks and then you'd still be after a cold air supply to them. This compared well with other modified filters by the way.

However, I think the bhp gains are probably more psychological along with the louder noise.

Especially when mine was on the same rolling road and pulled more torque and power with a panel air filter......hehe (FuriousD)
