I don't mind a bit of ketchup in a bacon sarnie; mayo on a bit salad / egg / tomatoe / cheese that sort of thing... but blimey, why do people feel the need to add one or the other - or both - over nearly every meal they have?

Roast beef with peppercorn sauce... yum. Or would you like some English with that? "Got any ketchup?"

banghead

Mackerel with leafy salad. How about a bit of horseradish? "Nah, got any mayo?"

banghead

mackerel and horseradish, good call sir.

Although to be fair, I do like horseradish on far too many things.

Burgers and Steak to name but 2.

And in a bloody mary.

and with chips......

Mrs Miniman is a bloody nightmare for this. She will hose any meal down with ketchup, BBQ sauce or mayo, or often all three, given half a chance. At least taste it before you decide it needs spraying with Heinz!

Didn't know it had worcester sauce in it? I always thought it was simply ketchup, mayo & paprika.

scratchchin Now you've got me wondering. I've always put a splash in, but I can't remember who told me to. Next time we have a BBQ, I'll try it with and without, and do a taste test. I've never put the paprika in, just sprinkled on the top. That's another one to try then thumbup

Can't stand anything like ketchup or Mayo or anything on food. Would much rather taste the food itself.

You're correct of course, however, carverys, you know the sort of place that used to serve orange juice on a doyley as a starter, use ketchup and salad cream...

right, marie rose sauce debate.

Ketchup
Mayo
Worcester (good lug)
Brandy (splash)
Tabasco (splash)
Pepper
Salt
Lemon Juice

Trust me, its the way to do it. Accept no substitute.

Well yes, that's the michelin starred version.

I've done a bit of a search (bored this afternoon) and I can't find a definitive version of the recipe anywhere, lots say put worcester sauce in, lots don't. I suppose ultimately it comes down to what you like. I'll certainly be experimenting with worcester sauce next time.

My main use of sauces...
Tomato Sauce - Cooked Breakfasts, Burgers, BBQ's etc (reggae reggae as a spicy alternative)
Mayo - Salads, Burgers, occasionally chips but not a big chip fan
Mustard - powder for enhancing cheese sauces, english on some nice ham from the bone
Geo Watkins Mushroom Ketchup & Worcester Sauce - used in place of oil when browning meat for cooking and flavouring (oh worcester sauce in a bag of plain crisps is great)

Beef (Horseradish and/or mustard)
Lamb (mint or redcurrant)
Pork (Apple & stuffing)
Chicken (redcurrant or cranberry)
Not a turkey fan

But I am a horseradish sauce & stuffing with all roasts person

HP Sauce in stew. WHY? I've just spent hours getting the flavour exactly right and you want to hose half a bottle of the stuff onto your bowlful BEFORE YOU'VE EVEN TASTED IT?

Urgh salad cream and mayo and ketchup yuck. The only thing to go on chips is salt and vinegar.
