I think I have found my car. Wanted to ask, its a 2002, K series. Is there anything specific I need to look out for in terms of buying second hand? She has done about 40000 miles, and never been tracked. Thanks.

The important one is signs of head gasket failure.

Also, play in the suspension and/or steering can mean moderately expensive repairs.

I can't remember when the dodgy resistor packs came in, but make sure the interior fans work on all speeds.

There isn't really much else to go wrong...

No different to any other engine in terms of the usual checks. So, check oil and coolant as a first priority. Have a look at whats coming out of the exhaust, both hot and cold. You definitley don't want to see blue smoke and there shouldn't be excessive white smoke once the car is warmed through. It should start easily both warm and cold. Check around the front that the radiator isn't leaking.

General Elise things to look out for, as mentioned the suspension is important because components are expensive and wear quickly. At 40,000 miles, a few things may need doing. Check for play in the steering rack and ball joints. Also check the brakes because discs and pads aren't very cheap on the Elise, particularly when you get drawn into upgrades.

Get a specialist to check it over, plenty of Lotus indies that will do this for a reasonable fee (don't get an AA/RAC inspection). Then take out AA parts and labour cover. Both will be the best £100ish you'll spend.

Thanks for the advice. I'm looking for an S2 around that price mark so will watch out for the things mentioned.
