You could buy a Nikon D40x with a 70-300 G for under £350

or a Nikon D40x with a 70-300 ED for under £500

To be honest there will not be a lot of difference in quality, but the ED lens you'd probably keep for a LOT longer. (Pro quality Nikon lenses always have ED in the title)

I don't do Canon, but I'm sure the equiv will be along soon

...But I'd stick to Canon or Nikon - don't go anywhere else, tempting though it may be.

300mm taking into account the camera's crop factor?

BR has a point - if you're used to 300mm on a 35mm SLR then 200mm on a Nikon DX DSLR will have the same reach. You get 50% more telephoto but less wide angle.

Indeed but if you (the OP) want a 300 - the 70-300 will give you exactly what you want at 200 - but will also give you the ability to go wider or longer too.

I guess Canon wise:

400d with 18 - 55mm kit lens and Sigma 70 - 300mm APO and for a little bit over the £450 you could add the Canon 50mm f1.8...

There some good deals at the mo on Canon and Nikon...
