Thinking about importing an S1 to strip and modify for racing....

Will the 2ZZ drop in or is there a whole heap of mods that need to be done first?

Can the 2ZZ be bored/stroked to 2.0L?

Will a 2.0 L MR2 engine fit instead? (cannot go V-TEC as rules stipulates same manufacturer as stock must be used)

Will an Exige rear clamshell drop straight on?

What suspension/brakes would be reccommended?

Cheers guys

techincally it can be done but it's not easy/cheap, the only two cars I know that have been done like where both faliures (in terms of what they were done for)

Yes, but it's not cheap.

I am sure it's possible, but once again, it will not be easy/cheap and to what end?

basically, yes (although you then need the roof to go with it etc)

How does fitting a 2ZZ tie in with that then? An S2 never had a Toyota Engine, it had a Rover K. So if you can't put a Honda in because it's not the same manufacturer, then you can't put a 2ZZ in surely? Unless of course you just mean it should be badged as Lotus - but in that case how would an MR2 engine work? smile

Why not just tweek the K to 190 the diferance in power would be of no real concern, to be honest an S1 with 190 will stand a chance against any conversion you have talked about, a 160 with a GOOD driver will be faster than most things your come up against

The regulations state that the engine must be from the same manufacturer so a toyota engine can be swopped for toyota etc. Also an engine from a newer model ie S2 can be fitted to the older model. I was looking at the swop as I would assume that the Toyota motor would be more reliable in this climate?

The race series is for production cars and the class I'm aiming for is the 'less than 2.0L' class.

I'm looking at picking up an S1 for around GBP7K (inc shipping) and then getting the mandatory hard-top or Exige clamshell, (stripping the additional seat!!) and upgrading brakes/cooling/intake/soot-pipe/suspension for circuit use in 40 degC heat.

For the amount of money you'd end up shelling out to just put a standard 'yota engine in, I'd say you're far better off going for a big spec K-Series. Could go for a 1900cc upgrade from someone like Hellier and see 240bhp+ from a much lighter engine.

the issue with that is exactly how long for?

Having been on tracks in UAE, they are NOT engine friendly, track temps are often way over 55-60C, this brings a whole set of new challenges to keeping an engine alive, not to mention the loss of power due to inlet temps etc etc..

Sounds as though you could consider buying David Skegg's LoT race car. It is an S1, substantially lightened, running a 1.9l k series making 240 odd bhp iirc. It was up for sale a while back.
