s2 alternator?

My old alternator has about had it,,, charges when it feels like it. What part number should I be looking for, ther appears to be lots of them?

Might be easier to take the old one with you to the motor factors to identify it.

May be obvious, but you do know it has to rev over about 2500rpm to start charging, once these revs have been passed it wil continue charging at lowewr revs. Intermittent charging is a bit unusual.

Got the same problem, as per another posting some one on here used, www.alternator.co.uk - 0870 803 4101 and quote Q & H FRA671 Bosch 90amp - Should be £79.00 + VAT.

If anybody knows better, please let me know, need to order one tomorrow!

Is this another TVR S Trait.

My S2 has done this since I bought in March. I tried to fix it by replacing the regulator on the back of the alternator, but it did'nt: So I have been living with it. Now blipping the throttle in a morning to get it charging is a real pleasure, the sound cheers me up no end .

Lucas LRA125 is the standard 65 amp one and is still listed as available so shouldn't be a problem. As advised above FRA671 is a more powerful alternative. I would agree with Chris however, take your old one along and make sure the new one has exactly the same mountings. There are quite a lot of starter/alternator re-manufacturing firms around who may well be able to exchange yours at a lot less than the retail for a new one if money is tight.

Hi guys. been away from the forum for couple of days,, found the alternator,, at a local factor in kirkby in ashfield Notts, £59 = vat. (ROTEC) quite a small place, but he knows his alternators... took mine for exchange. He told me the original fitment for this one was on a Jag! 90 amp right side fitting. Fitted and working great, still have to rev it to get it going though. Sorry he does not take card payment, so no mail order. Thanks

No doubt someone will give the full techie reasoning for this but I seem to recall that if the Charging dash-light blows then the load required to get the alternator charging is not there so it doesnt... if you see what I mean. similarly if the dash bulb has been replaced by an LED type, then it will glow OK but still not create the load required... might be worth checking.

Yep you do have to give it a rev up to get the alternator charging, its a feature of the car, see Steve Heaths bible page 105, you have to hit 2200rpm. But dont do it on a cold engine wait till you a couple of hundred yards down 't road. Kevin is correct no working bulb = no load = no charging, someone here has fitted an extra bulb under the bonnett to ensure a load.

Do you have any manufacturer/part numbers so we can add to the alternative parts list?
