Im still doing legwork before buying one of these cars. Ive got up to about 19k to spend. Im wanting a car that in addition to some 'splash and dash' type local fun will also be ok for a run over to france with a few clothes thrown into some hand luggage to sample the european roads and culture.

Ive read all the threads on the power vs weight vs torque etc and all the 111R v 111s discussions but as an all round package which in terms of 'comfort' and tourability what are the views on the most suitable derivative.

Apologies if this has been discussed but Ive been through all the searches and cant find anything specific

111R smile

Better build quality than the K cars
Arguably more dependable motor
More comfortable interior especially on 2006 cars onwards

Only real downer is the MPG is not as good as the 111S. Depends how many miles you intend to do per year in the car...

Gotta be the 111R, well screwed together and very reliable (in most cases...) If there's no induction mods or sports exhaust it will also be fine on the motorway...

Another vote for the 111R. Took mine on a 4500 mile trip around Europe last August. Nurburgring, Stelvio Pass, Monza, Modena, Furka Pass, into Austria, Slovenia etc etc. Only prob was front indicator flying out which is discussed in many other threads on PH..

The later spec 111s's were built alongside the 111r's so had the same touring refinements and were just as well put together!

Yep but the last of the line 111S cars are quite hard to find... 111Rs are plentiful.

Engine makes no real difference for touring (except for the horrendous fuel consumption on the Toyota engined cars). Lotus were constantly improving the refinement - get the latest car you can.

What model year onwards am i looking for in getting a 111 s/r in a good build quality spec. Why is there a difference in the 2 on the earlier models

The 04 models had improved seats, central locking & electric windows & a bit more padding from the early 02/03 111s's. You can tell the difference by noticing the basic seats in the early 02/03 111s's & the bare gearstick & no central locking. Ideally you want an 05 onwards as they came with the additional touring softtop, hardtop thrown in & the same touring pack as the improved 111r's.

There's a reason there aren't many on the market & there are loads of 111r's. Everyone realises how good they are & don't want to sell them laugh

You get the same luxury, build quality of the 111r's but with less weight & better fuel consumption.

Without being obviously biased ideally you may want to try out both. Bear in mind the 111r has servo assisted brakes & different engine characteristics than a 111s. You may prefer the 2nd cam madness & easier brakes of the 111r, or you may prefer the 111s's nimbleness & different power delivery. You don't know until you sit behind the wheel of them both.

Without even driving it, the best elise for touring will be the supercharged.
You can speck it for touring, the added torque of the SC makes for easy (lazy)gear change.

After doing long runs with a 240R, the 240 was far leaner on fuel so I have no doubt that the SC would behave similarly.

cheers gooby but i dont think my budget will stretch to the SC model, ive not seen any under 22k. Im guessing for my 18k or so im looking at a 2005 model 111R or spend a bit less and get a similar year 111S

Well I can easily get >35mpg if I really want to, so I'd not call that bad for the performance it gives.

[sarcasm mode on] better motorway milage than a prius and sub 5 second 0-60, that is horrendous, disgraceful... anyway which maroon brought an elise for fuel economy - sod off and buy a diesel lupo [sarcasm mode off]

Diesels are often not economical. The shame is so many modern engines have got worse consumption than some old ones. Anyway, you could asks "who buys an Elise for touring".

lol, that genuinely made me laugh. Forgot to check what MPG I got doing 100+ miles yesterday @70 (had my parents following me as they didn't know where they were going). I did get 34 out of a tank the other day, which had a bit of blating about - but then again, I don't really care what I get, as I didn't buy it to save fuel. I don't think there are many cars where you could have as much fun on a gallon.

Not to mention the many many people who have toured around Europe in their Elise/Exige, many to end up at some great driving roads, many just for the hell of it.
