My air con needs toping up does any one know what pressure it should be??????????

Pressure is not typically measured in an A/C system.
A service center with the proper equipment will first "drain" the refrigerant you have in the system, dry the system out while under vacuum (may take up to an hour), check for leaks, and then re-fill with the specified mass of refrigerant. The mass of refrigerant you will need is about 1 kg for UK systems, but only about 0.6 kg for U.S. systems.

Easiest is to tell them to use the sight glass. If they look stupidly at you, go somewhere else.
