I used Sikaflex 221.
Available at good motor factors.
PS
I also tried:
Gutter sealant (looks the same but no adhesion - doh!)
Black silicone bathroom sealant (not ideal for holding on the plastic cover)
Needles to say, after carefully removing said gunk, the Sikaflex was utterly magic, but:
(1) Make sure you apply enough - it needs a good size of bead.
(2) I recommend parking the car so that you can apply pressure using a piece of wood rammed against a wall / garage door at an angle (while the Sikaflex cures)
Best of luck.
And be careful removing the old sealant or you'll lift chunks of paint (apparently - luckily I was warned about this before I carried out my headlamp reseal.
