Exhaust pipes...?

On a standard S, are the tail pipes black or bare metal in apperance?

Tony Theres no such thing as a 'standard' S I think they have always been 'mix and match' but most exhauste are stainless now.

A more intersting question might be who makes the loudest exhaust systems.

On this subject, and in these days of performance pipes making Fiestas sound like drag cars, are there any rear boxes out in the market that enhance the V-six sound (without being too big and looking like a clown car).

Is yours an S3C? I think so from the picture on your profile. If so, I'd say the decat is the first port of call if you want to improve the sound. It'll probably improve the engines response too. When mine came off one of them dumped its contents all over the garage floor and the other was very rattly. Loads more 'zing' in the engine once they were disposed of.

If you're registered before the 1st of August 1992 then you will get the very very easy non-cat test at MoT test time and a de-catted car will pass easily. The Pipes are about £80 I think from ACT. You'll probably find that the current units are shagged anyway.

I'm thinking of purchasing a sports exhaust this month. I've seen two easily available options:

-> JP exhausts (i.e. ACT supplied) which costs £380+VAT.
-> TVR car parts supplied which costs £325+VAT.

Does anyone have any experience of which sounds best?

The TVR Car parts one isn't original spec mild steel is it? I assume not but worth asking.

Well mine has been changed to a ss, but the chap said the tailpipes were painted black so they were in-keepeing?

Original pipes were mild steel (no black paint).

I like my stainless one split into two pairs of tail pipes ala Triumph Stag and they come out just about underneither the inner edge of the light clusters.

See my website - sounds good but can't get the bugger to pop and bang - any ideas on how to achieve this?

overadvance your ignition ? mine used to pop and bang terrible on over-run dropping down a 1 in 6 to the village on a cold morning... used to scare animals and small children ! but improved once I set the timing correctly - was over advanced before... Not the kind of thing I would do deliberately to be honest

Both exhausts are stainless and both have polished tail pipes. There is a different in styling - the TVR car parts item has the twin exhausts separated by a gap (like the V8S). The ACT part has the twin tail pipes together so the car looks standard. My guess is that both companies would restyle if required.

I had a custom ACT system with the pipes in the Middle, but V8 Sized pipes, which filled out the back a little more. Also had a custom silencer on it too. I believe there's a video floating around somewhere.

I have the TVR Parts s/s system, I personally think it's the better exaust, it certainly sounds better, the rear pipes are slightly bigger, giving it a nice tone.

At S heaven, I saw the various types of exausts but I did not hear anything that sounded as good as mine, but I would be biased wouldn't I.
